According to the manual, the 2011 Ford Escape does not use hydraulic power steering. The rack and pinion steering gear that is used with the Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system is a manual (non-hydraulic) steering gear that is contained within a 1-piece die castaluminum housing. The power assist is provided by a 12-volt, 65 amp brush-less motor, mounted to the steering column. The steering column and motor/module are serviced as an assembly.

I would get a scan of the vehicle and see what's wrong. Don't replace anything until you find out what is wrong

Power Steering - Hybrid The electric power assist steering system consists of:

• power steering control module
• electric motor
• torque sensor
• rack-and-pinion steering gear

The electric power steering system provides power steering assist to the driver by replacing the conventional hydraulic valve system with an electric motor coupled to the steering gear. The motor is controlled by an electronic control unit that senses the steering effort through the use of a torque sensor mounted between the steering column shaft and the steering gear. Steering assist is provided in proportion to the steering input effort and vehicle speed.

your best bet would be to have the ford dealer check it out !

The power steering is controlled by an electric motor and not the normal belt driven pump ... So it's gonna be an issue with the electric pump on the steering rack

This had been an intermittent problem on my 2012 Fusion, but the other day it became permanent. I have since discovered that the Fusion has electronic power steering, that this problem is caused by a bad module, and that the fix involves replacing the entire rack and pinion system.
