This is a difficult question to answer because if you are going to rebuild that, the cylinders need to be honed and that changes the sizes, you would have to micrometer the cylinders and get oversize rings. While you can order OEM sizes, they are not listed in any detail and they are not cheap.

Three sizes of pistons are available:
1. Std.
2. Over size 0.010 in (0.25 mm).
3. Over size 0.020 in (0.50 mm).
Over sized pistons and rings are widely used in all automobiles with no trouble at all. They last for more than 200,000 km, provided if the engine oil, oil filter and air filters are replaced at the recommended intervals.
The most important point to consider here is to maintain the oil clearances between the various parts during the machining process.
For example piston to cylinder clearance, crankshaft to main journals and big ends clearance, valve to guide clearance, at room temperature. Then comes cleaning process and the engine assembling process.

It's rare that a piston goes bad. So, you need to determine why it failed.
Most times, the cylinder wall is damaged during a piston failure making it impossible to just replace the piston. Check the wall for score marks and out of round condition as well as actual size VS original bore size. (correcting that requires machine work) The new piston must match the cylinder bore as it is now, NOT what it was when manufactured. (same applies to rings).
The old rod can be re-used if it is not bent and providing that the big end (crank end) is still round. Again, the rod needs to be assembled by a machine shop as the wrist-pin is a press-in part.
Most times, you will find that the amount of actual work necessary to replace one piston exceeds what would be necessary to replace the engine in both time, $ and reliability.
If you want to try a replacement though, see if you can get a piston/rod assembly that is still in good condition from a blown junkyard engine, Plasti-gage the bearing and replace if necessary, clean out the ring grooves or replace the rings. Use a hand held cylinder hone and break the glaze on the cylinder walls. If you are careful and everything goes well, it MIGHT work.
Personally I would never replace pistons in an engine without doing all the necessary machine work though.

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

Have oil in one of the spark plug cylinders what would be causing this ?


broken/worn piston ring(s). Each piston has 2 rings. These can be replaced by the DIY mechanic by
1) removing head of engine (remove head gasket - you'll replace it), then
2) manually wind the engine (with a ratchet wrench & socket) til the piston in question pops up
3) remove both rings (with ring pliers - available from any auto parts store)
4) install 2 new rings (with a ring installation collar - available at any auto parts store)
--- choose ring installation tool to the correct size for your pistons.
5) re-install head of engine (replacing head gasket)

Note that this procedure preserves the engine timing, so you need not reset it.

Melted the piston and rings in cylinder 1 , the rest are fine ,will recondition the engine it solve it ?


FIND THE CAUSE BEFORE YOU JUST REPLACE THE PISTON AND RINGS. MOST LIKELY TOO MUCH HEAT FROM CLOGGED FUEL INJECTOR. COULD HAVE INGESTED SOMETHING THAT DAMAGED THE TOP OF PISTON TO START THE PROBLEM. COULD HAVE OVERHEATED ALL OVER, BUT ONLY #1 WENT FIRST.
I WOULD FIND THE CAUSE BEFORE FIXING WHAT HAPPENED.
TAKE THE INJECTORS TO LOCAL INJECTOR SHOP BEING SURE YOU KEEP #1 SEPERATE AND TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED.
THE DIESEL FUEL INJECTION REPAIR SHOP CAN USUALL TEST THESE TOO.
GO TO THE SHOP THAT REPAIRS INJECTOR AND PUMPS, NOT THE PLACE THAT WORKS ON BIG RIGS.

I rebuild my engine an it is smoking when running. I intall new pistons and rings. I think that the problem are the rings that have to be a size greater than standard (.25)?????? HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?...


first you should have check your engine block to see what wear it had before you buy new piston. that will determin what oversize piston and rings to used , will if it come to that , it areally waste of work done

This may be the cause of piston rings,cracker piston or engine oil overfull that have failed in the engine. The cause is oil getting on the top of the motor burning with the gas.May want to check engine timing.

Winding in the piston


if it is a piston for the engine you need a ring compressor. it is a wide band that goes around the piston and rings and squeezes then you tap the piston into the cylinder. make sure you oil it.

ur problem is very easy to solve, but its an expensive fix..........($$$)

i dont know how much u know about cars, but every car with en engine(other than the Wankel) which has pistons......the pistons run in the cylinders of the engine block......at the top of the engine is where all the work is done, at the bottom part(just below the pistons), there is a lot of oil to lubricate all of the fast moving engine parts.....when a car burs oil what usually happens is that the oil goes up from the crank case, squesses between the piston and the cylinder walls and gets burned with the gas......and vise versa, at the power stroke the exhaust gasses enter the crankcase and slowly burn the oil that way.......so oil burns every 2 of the 4 strokes......there is 4 strokes in one rpm......idling is about 1500 rpm for ur audi....u do the math.......and the oil slowly burns........when the car heats up the oil burns even faster bacuse the temperature of the oil is already high.......
the pistons are equipped with piston rings to prevent oil from getting into the combustion chamber and exhaust gasses getting into the crankcase.......and the tolerance between the pston and the cylinder is also very important for the car not to burn oil......
tehre are a few ways to fix it.........the best and the most expensive would be to: bore out the cylinders, get new pistons (v6...) and get new rings, and u also might need to get the block and heads faced off(if there is any warpage....the heads are aluminum...).......
this process is called and engine rebuild and could cost u well over $2000 depending on what kind of quality u are looking for.......(its not worth it.....especially for this car, they are very cheap)...

the cheapest way to fix the problem about 75% would be just to get new piston rings.......but as soon as u take those heads off....shaving them is a must if they are warped.........and while u still have them off u might need to do the valves, which could also help the problem......and while u have the pistons out, might as well change them too...right???? so its spendy......

u might also have another problem,......a faulty gasket or o-ring, and the oil might be leaking from that faulty spot right on the exhaust, and might burn the oil that way...........that would defently explain the smell getting into the car.....if this is what is wrong, then the fix could be very easy, fast, and cheap...

if ur burning too much oil, it could be both of the problems at the same time.........plus a few more on top of that......
