SOURCE: starting in damp weather 1993 240 wagon, auto/od, 235k miles

perhaps you need a new cap and roter a new spark plug wire set. they don;t like moisture. also check to see if you have any broken or leaking vacuum hoses. the worse case senerio would be that your head gasket is leaking--at cold temps a little antifreeze will enter until everything warms up and it seals shut due to metal expanding. but since you say it's cold weather only--this probably wou;dn't be the case. good luck.

SOURCE: where do i find the

Hi,

The overdrive solenoid is connected to the transmission itself on this Volvo. You will find the switch on the passenger side of the transmission. It looks like this

82c5d40.jpg
As a means of testing operation of the solenoid - you can ground out this switch by turning the key in the ignition into the on position. Make sure engine is off and the transmission in 4th gear and listen for the click of the soleniod on the back of the overdrive. Also the light on the dash should iluminate as well.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.

I have a 1993 volvo wagon with 112 000kms the check engine light has come on. how do you get it turned off?

disconnect battery for 5 minutes, re-connect. if the light stays on, get a code reader and retrieve code to find what the problem is and solve it

IT STAYS ON (ARROW POINTS UP)

You don't say whether it is a manual or Automatic trans ( they both have an electric overdrive). Assuming it is an Auto trans the problem is most likely the Orange colored OD relay to the left and behind the Glove box. Or the push switch on the gear selector may have an open circuit but less likely.

THE OVERDRIVE OFF INDICATOR LIGHT IS ON. IT HAS THE UP ARROW LIGHT (YELLOW LIGHT) WE HAVE CHECKED THE SWITCH ON THE GEARSHIFT AND IT IS OK. HOW CAN WE TURN OFF THIS LIGHT AND HOW DO WE DO THE OBD 1 ON THIS...

since both the manual and aotomatic trrans have OD which do you have/ f it is a auto trans then this light is on to indicate a problem in the OD control circuit, most likely the solenoid for OD.

It has a built in code reader. It's the little black box by the drivers side hood hing. It has 6 sockets , a wire attached to it that you plug into them , and a button. Turn key on ,don't start, plug the wire into 2 and push button 2 - 3 seconds , little red next to button should light as long as button pushed.Release button , light will blink a 3 digit code . Count carefully. Repeat process again until codes repeat. # 2 socket is ignition # 6 is Fuel injection. Code 1 1 1 means system OK. To reset FI pull the engine control / fuel pump fuse . Think it's 6 on your car. Code meanings can be found on line ( auto X ray)

1992 240 Volvo automatic transmission won't shift out of 3rd gear

Check the transmission filter, may be clogged up, do not change the oil, keep the same oil when replacing filter, trust me to avoid transmission repair.

940 volvo comes out of overdrive without touching button

IPDusa.com.  If its similar to a 240 (and it most likely is) you can purchase a block off plate for the solenoid so you won't lose 4th gear (actually its OD from torque converter lockup).

Does anyone know what the orange arrow light means on the instrument panel of an older volvo sedan?

Means the overdrive is disengaged. There should be a button on the side of the shifter. If pressing this does not engage the OD, then you may need to replace the OD solenoid.

The heater motor makes a loud noise when the temp gets below 20

You are probably in the end stage of its life. Prepare for an imminent failure. Mine squealed for a few months off and on before it gave it up. Following the funeral I replaced it. If you are handy and patient, you can replace it, but have all the parts ordered beforehand. I got mine from IPDUSA.com and was happy with the outcome.

Stuck in overdrive

Overdrive relay usually fixes the problem. With the engine idling quietly, press the OD switch on the shift lever. Do you hear a click? If not, it is probably the relay. Located behind the glove box, passenger side. toward the center console. Pick up a used one on Ebay ( about $10 bucks) and swap it out. Cured my problem right away. Be sure you change the correct relay because Volvo hides several back there. I would buy the spare, then match it with the one now installed. If not the relay, you will need a new solenoid in the transmission. About $200 installed.

Volvo 240 GL Transmission

You have an overdrive relay issue. The tansmission is really a four-speed box, but the OD selector either locks our fourth gear or allows the car to shift normally into fourth. I use the OD on my volvo all the time, because the revs drop in half when the OD is activated, The relay is located behind the glove box, toward the center console. $10 buck on Ebay and your transmission should shift correctly again. I would try that BEFORE more expensive fixes, like OD solenoid $200 or transmission control module. Just for kicks a picked up a spare ECU on Ebay for $10 because these get costly if and when they go. Easy fix, though, a couple of plugs.
