Is this a common problem please?
Make sure your rad fan is coming on when it heats up . Test it by letting the engine idle for 20 minutes after it reaches operating temp . The fan should come on . Water pump could also be the problem or a plugged radiator . Heat can certainly blow a head gasket and warp heads . I don't know the material of your head .
Thank you, I also wanted to know if this is a common problem with this vehicle. Wife is using it today so will have to check tomorrow. Your help is appreciated. regards Ray
I have never dealt with an overheating Hyundai . But this doesn’t mean it is not a common problem
A blown head gasket could also be the problem . The rad cap allows the presure to build to approx 15 psi . This allows the boiling point to increase to as hoist as maybe 230 degrees . If there is a leak like a bad head gasket or a faulty rad cap the presure will drop and cause overheating . .some signs of a head gasket problem OS a milky oily substance on the bottom of oil cap or on the dip stick . Or oil in the coolant . A compression test and a leak down test can detect head gasket problems .
Thanks for the advice Wayne, looks like it may be an expensive repair.
Hope it’s only the fan or cap , good luck
Thank you.

ok, its time for a radiator flush. there is major sludge in the internals of this radiator. Make sure the thermostat is in the correct position as well. I've seen many cars come into my shop with the thermostat inserted backwards.

Hi
It sounds like the transmission slipped. You need have the vehicle check for trouble codes and the trans. fluid level.

SOURCE: how to replace a valve cover gasket 2003 hyundai santa fe
Just take a picture of it with digital camera or phone. And start removing wires and hoses until they are all out of way of cover. Then remove the bolts all way around cover and pull straight up and it will come right off. If not use a flat head screw driver to prise it off. Clean old gasket off of valvecover and engine. then put it bak together. Tighten bolts slowly, start with ones in center ov it and work your way out. Just finger tight. Then snug, then torque em down. Not too tight as if tostrip the bolt or break it off. Cause it be very expensive. also write down everywhere each wire go's unless you can remember
