Unplug the light connection while off and start the engine. Shut off the engine , re-plug it in .. if the light comes on.. the sensor is bad. or the fuse link.

the check engine light can come on for any number of reasons mostly emissions related problems. the first step is to identify the code responsible for the light. there are many auto parts stores that will scan the vehicle free of charge for you. i suggest that first.
