Ford Explorer 2000 'sputters' when driving in hot weather

I have a ford explorer 2000 4x4. I've noticed on very hot days (100+) when I drive around too long with the AC on, the engine loses power.. when I step on the gas the truck sputters almost like it's running out of gas. What could be the problem?

Thank you for that input. I also changed out the fuel filter today (needed to be done anyway!).

Is this a common problem in this model vehicle?

Ok guys well I opened up the gas cap and left it 'mostly open' ... also replaced fuel filter yesterday. Problem repeated itself today. Could this possibly be an issue with the fuel pump itself? Keep in mind the temp guage is staying right in the middle... no signs of actually overheating.

Do you drive around with it open?

You may be experiencing vapor lock you will have to open you gas cap from time to time in extreme hot weather to let some air into your tank.or have a gas line cooler installed on yur vehicle.

1997 ford explorer limited; used 4x4 a couple days ago (we had a lot of snow) and now is stuck on 4x4 low also every time i drive it the (o/d off) light blinks repeatedly.

Your transmission should be in neutral when shift from 4x4 low to high. Also the brake needs to be depressed. If you have done that I would say it is a solenoid in the transfer case or the relay that drives the transfer case solenoid.

My 2000 ford explorer is stalling, misfiring and cutting off during hot weather driving....could it be a bad pcm, idle control value or something else

I had my 1999 xlt do this to me last month when we were having 95+ degree weather and I was driving in the mountains. It just stalled on me. I let it sit for a half hour and drove fairly slow with the windows down and no air. I was told that it vapor locked on me?? It hasn't acted up since. Who knows!
