The headlight fuse was blown. I had used a plug-in tyre pump on the rear power outlet and its plug came apart when I tried to remove it. I may have shorted the circuit as the air pump did not work when I plugged it into the rear outlet, but it did when plugged into the front outlet.. Next day I found that the headlights did not work, so checked the fuse to find that it had blown. The air pump now works OK in the rear outlet. The owner's manual does not mention the rear outlet at all in the lists of fuses, nor in the fusebox lid tables. It seems that the rear power outlet and headlights share the same circuit. Any ideas?

You didn't mention the fuse rating of the one you replaced so this method may not help if it was higher than ~5 amps.At this point, I would wire a 12 volt bulb, preferably, one with 40-50 watts rating (headlamp will do fine) in place of the fuse that is blowing and start pulling likely connectors until the light goes out.
If you don't get results this way, you might try disturbing one bundle of wire after another since this could be happening because of insulation that has been pinched or worn through to reach ground.
Using a bulb instead of bridging the fuse with a piece of coathanger will prevent melting the wire and possibly compounding the problem.

It sounds like the receptical has shorted out. Remove the receptical and make sure the ground wire (black wire) is in tact, and make sure the wire to the center of the receptical (power wire) is securely attached. If both are secure, the receptical is faulty and needs to be replaced.

you must have a blown fuse look on the fuse cover if it has one and also check the realy and fuse panel under hood PLS tak time to rate this solution

if you have power at the head light plug or pig tail then you have a bad ground turn the head lights on and probe the ground wire with the balb still in if the lights come on the run new ground wire or find the broken wire and repair it
