SOURCE: No power for AC compressor
It sounds like you may be low on freon, if the low pressure switch, senses low freon pressure, it won't let the A/C come on. You either have low freon, or the low pressure switch on the accumulator has gone bad. Both common problems with that vehicle.

Your switch must be working since your indicator is telling you when the high beams are on, so my guess is that your bulbs are faulty. The high beam part. They probably burnt out one at a time, so you didn't notice until the second one went. Change your bulbs, and see if that solves it. If not, let me know.

you don't have enough pressure in your system. odds are you have a leak someplace and the factory installed a saftey switch to keep the ac from running when there is no pressure. This way you don't end up burning up your compressor.
