'wouldn't crank' means it doesn't turn over, you turn the key and nothing happens, no click, no starter, the engine doesn't move.

or

Do you means it does crank and turn over but it doesn't fire or start?

If it ran out of fuel it will have burnt out the fuel pump. The gas provides cooling and lubrication for the pump and they burn themselves out in less than 5 minutes. The people that took it will have been trying to start it when it stopped. Get a garage to check fuel pump pressure.

How do you reset the anti-theft system on a Hyundai Sonata?
Use the ignition key to unlock the Sonata doors, then open the door and enter the driver's seat. Put the key into the ignition and turn the ignition cylinder clockwise as far as it will go before cranking the Sonata engine. Leave the key here for 30 seconds to deactivate the system.

try wiggling your steering wheel back and forth as you try to turn the key it could be in a bind.

clicking is usually a sign the motor is failing, warn bushes, an extra jump from another battery would make the motor work as its getting more power. can also be a build up of bush dust in the motor these will overheat the motor over time give bad connection and even burn out the motor poles. other problems that can case the same problem are the earth strip and the live feed not getting a good connection, this will limit the power to the motor,

where to start... see if lights turn on, if not charge battery, once battery is charge try again, if cranks then could be battery or alternator, if not could be starter, spark plugs, coilpack... after youve looked at that let me know, ill adv further.

So if your Elantra won't start, turn the key to where you can move the shift .... Having exact same problem on my 2011 elantradid you find out ...

These details will help,keep updated for more help.

check to see if getting spark or fuel if no spark could be crank sensor or cam sensor have to check voltage out of wiring harness if low voltage ecm bad. Pull both coil wires off coil and have someone turn ignition no spark probably ecm. For fuel check number one plug see if wet and also listen when you turn key for fuel pump. If driving it just died on ya and battery went dead like know and you tried jumping or replacing battery.Still would not start ecm bad.

I had same problem with my 2002 Sonata. Turned out to be Ignition switch relay under the hood. $22 part from dealer. Check ignition fuses under hood also.
