There should be battery voltage at the fuel pump. Check the battery voltage at the fuel pump relay to be sure that there is power coming from the battery. Check voltage at fuel pump fuse.

SOURCE: 97 gmc pickup, 5.7 eng, fuel pump not operating,

What you need to do is check you fuel pressure. Go to a local auto parts store and buy a fuel injection pressure tester. The pressure fitting is on the top of the motor its a 3/8 ish sized metal line and has a screw on fitting like a tire valve does. This line comes up from the back of the motor to the right of the distributor and goes down into the intake. Make sure to have a rag handy to catch the fuel seepage. After you connect the pressure tester turn the key on and off three times and read the gage you should have atleast 58 pounds of pressure. If you have 56 pounds it won't run because the fuel injectors are a poppit valve style and need atleast 58 pounds of pressure to operate.

SOURCE: How do you check voltage on the fuel pump on a

Hello Dennis.
When you are checking fuel pump voltage on your pickup when you turn on the key the voltage is only applied to the pump for a couple of seconds unless you go to cranking position.
There are 4 wires leading to the fuel pump on your truck. The gray wire is the 12 volt positive power feed to the fuel pump and the black provides the ground. The orange and purple wires are your fuel gauge wires.
The relay for the fuel pump is in your under hood fuse panel and I believe is marked on the underside of the fuse panel cover. It should click on and off again quickly when you turn the key to "on". Having a helper to cycle the key would be handy while you put your finger on the relay and listen to it. Just because it clicks still doesn't mean it's functional but relay failure on these models is somewhat rare.
I would start by checking for power at the fuel pump harness.
Fuel pump issues are quite common on these model year trucks.
Hope this helps you out.

SOURCE: I replaced fuel pump and

not knowing what kind of vehicle it is it is hard to tell. some gm cars and trucks have oil sending units that will not allow the vehicle to start unless it has oil pressure. they start going out and sometimes they start and sometimes they won"t.

Why the fuel pump don't run and the relay don't click when i turn the key on?

If you can't hear your fuel pump priming then either, the pump needs replacing or the relay. If you replace the relay and you still don't hear the pump prime then it's the fuel pump.

I just put a fuel pump in my 2000 chevy silverado 2 weeks ago and now it wont run and all the fuel pump will do is click when you turn the key on but it only clicks once?

spray gasoline or carb cleaner into intake. If engine starts, it's a fuel problem. You have a bad (new) fuel pump or relay. Either no power to pump or pump is bad (unlikely but possible).

Started motor fine a few minutes later it died and would not start again had wife crank over while i look in carb no gas spraying into carb prime with gas and it would run for a sec then die again...

When you state "carb" I assume you mean TB as it should be Throttle Body Injection, unless it was converted.
You should be able to hear the fuel pump in the tank prime for about 2 seconds when you first turn the key on. May have to get your helper to remove the gas cap and listen through the filler.
If you don't hear a buzzing sound then check the relays on the firewall. You can turn the key off, wait a couple seconds and then turn the key on and have your helper listen and feel for the relay that clicks.
Or look for the wires,
The relay will have a dark green/white from the ECM
Grey is power to the pump when the relay is enegized.
Orange is hot at all times. It comes from the ECM B fuse. Should check that as well if not done so.
Black/white is a ground.

Now most likely if your relay clicks when the key is turned on then its all fine and the fuel pump has gone out. The oil pressure switch also enegizes the pump when there is oil pressure.

I can pour gas into the carburetor and car starts, run until gas is gone fom carburetor. I disconnect hose from fuel pump to carburetor and do not see gas flow. Fuel pump has been replaced. Am thinking...

I would say more than likely your problem is a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. To narrow this down, listen for the fuel pump 'priming' (making a whining noise from the gas tank) turn the key to the On position and you should hear this whining for about 3 seconds, if you can hear this the fuel pump works fine, if not it is probably time for a new one. As for the fuel filter being that it is a 1987, I would replace it even if it is not clogged, the easiest way to test if it is clogged though is to blow at through it with your mouth and if you feel any resistance then it needs replacing.

I have a 1987 chevy silverado the fuel pump just stopped working yesterday but I finally got it to work again. Now the problem is that when I turn the key to the on position in my truck instead of the fuel...

yes, it could be a relay... you could also have a leak. Is the pump in the tank or outside the tank? if inside,. you may want to recheck your work..

2001 silverado v6 died while pulling into parking lot. Cranks but won't start. Can't hear the fuel pump engage when I turn on the key. Replaced fuel pump relay. Does this mean I have a bad fuel pump?

Try spraying an alternative fuel such as induction cleaner into the throttle body and see if it runs.If it does most likely cause is the fuel pump.

1997 Chevrolet Silverado Fuel System

Hello Johnholley
I am wondering do you hear the fuel pump when you just turn the key into the on run position not crank just in run and listen and see if you hear the fuel pump run for a second, If you don't hear it you will want to check for power at the fuel tank, and have some one cycle the key while your under the truck with a test light. Hopefully you have power and you hear the fuel pump run. Now if you do hear the fuel pump running then the next thing you will want to check is for spark, It could be the ignition module or pickup coil. check out those thing and I am sure you will be able to figure out whats going on. If you don't get back to me and we can try a few other methods. I sure hope that helps you out johnholley. and thanks for using Fix Ya Bear001

1987 4.3L starting difficulty

First off, I'm a great believer in the simple solution. If jumping the relay works, then replace the relay.

As far as a relationship between fuel pump operation and oil pressure, coincidence of operation.

If the new relay fails you, I'll need some more info:
  • Fuel Injected? If you turn the key on (not to start) do you hear the fuel pump come on for a sec then shut off?
  • Hard to start when hot, cold, doesn't matter
  • When it does start, does it idle ok? erratically? High? Won't stay running? Dies immediately?
  • Does it blow smoke? Black? Blue? White?
  • When driving, does it lack power? Stumble? Stall?
Hope it's the relay
