It's held down by one bolt right above the timing chain cover. It's next to the head that's facing toward the front of the car.

What does the cam sensor on a 01 malibu do

To answer the first question, "What does the cam sensor on a 01 Malibu do?": A cam sensor is actually a camshaft positioning sensor.

The Camshaft sensor determines which cylinder is firing to establish injector synchronization and coil firing sequence in DIS systems.

There is also a Crankshaft sensor which sets ignition timing, supply the RPM signal, and determines the engine speed.

The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head.

The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.

You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankshaft_position_sensor

I would first check for any OBD codes- and based upon what the reader displays, work from there. You may also want to have a copy of your car's injector circuit and wiring diagram available; along with a troubleshooting and testing guide for same.

Here's a youtube link that gives you some idea regarding a car's injector system: http://youtu.be/JTCgUY51g0s

I have a 2003 chevy malibu with 90,000 miles. i took it in for maintenance and the mechanic said that it was showing trouble code p0341. he said it was the cam sensor. yesterday when i went to start it, it...

if the cam sensor is bad, it will definitely not start. The cam shaft position sensor's function is: the engine speed and crankshaft position information is supplied frome a sensor which is usually situated at the front or rear of the crankshaft. note that distributor-located engine speed sensor are generally being replaced with crank shaft-located sensors,as worn disributor drives and associated components can effect the accuracy of the engine speed signal.

A camshaft position sensor,or cylinder identification sensor is used to determin the engine cycle position the information is used to provide individual cylinder ignition and injection cotrol. Many engine mangement systems use an inductive type of sensor that is located near the camshaft;when the camshaft rotates a single signal is passed to the ECU to indicate a reference point in the engine cycle

I need to find out where the camshaft position sensors are located on a 2008 Chevy Malibu LS 4 cylinder. They need to be replaced and i was told that they are fairly easy to do it yourself.

The cam sensor is on the back of the engine, drivers side. On the side of the head, facing the wheel. Just under the rocker arm cover. Only thing on that side. Four bolts to remove it.

I need step by step instructions on how to replace my camshaft sensor on a 2002 chevy malibu

Go to your local auto parts store and purchase a Haynes Manual # 38026 which covers 1997 through 2003 Malibu's and it will give you step by step instructions as well as diagrams and photos of the procedure. Most Camshaft Sensors are located in the distributor cap under the rotor button. They generally have three to four wires dependent on the type of camshaft sensor is employed, but insofar as setting it or "gapping" it like you may have to do with a crankshaft sensor, this is a simple remove and replace. Depending upon your engine, look at the distributor and if you see under the distributor cap a small ribbon wire (like in computers), it will always be attached closely to a plug on the wiring harness. The Haynes Manual will even give you the wiring gauge, color and location in the back of the manual whereas Chilton never caught on to putting wiring diagrams in their books. You'll find the Camshaft Sensor in section 14, Emissions insofar as how to test and/or replace it.

I dont know where it is

it is located behind the power steering pump. You need to remove the power steering pump to get to it which requires removing the engine mount next to it to get the bottom bolt out of the power steering pump. The sensor is directly behind the power steering pump. You can follow the cable that goes behind the pump. It is the only one there.
