I need to bypass my AC compressor and clutch belt so that I can still drive it until I can replace it on my 1997 Jeep Cherokee sport... NOT Grand Cherokee sport

What size belt is needed for this bypass? And the diagram of how it's installed

If there is nothing wrong with the ac pulley bearing , just disconnect the power to the compressor and use it as an idle pulley
because the ac pulley is in the system , and another belt that by passes that pulley will have the belt grooves running on a flat idler and the belt life is considerably reduced to over come that will require another idler pulley and bracket

I doubt anyone knows that off the top of their head. You could run a string through the path you want the belt to take and measure how much string it takes. This will give you an approximate length for the belt -- most parts stores could find one close to that size.

SOURCE: Fuse diagram for the 2001 jeep cherokee sport 4.0L needed

Believe the AC compressor Relay is located on the left side of the Fuse block inside the passenger kick panel. Exact location is in your owners manual.

Fuel pump relay is inside of the Engine Fuse block under the hood on the passenger side. Locations are written inside of the lid.

If you need more details about youe Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokee, can check this documents about Repair Manual: Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 FSM

To get out, it's easy and doesn't require a prybar.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a a/c problems

Your clutch is not being energized - ergo the compressor will not run - no AC. Get yourself a schematic so you can intelligently trace all of the wiring to your clutch and locate the source of the problem. Afterthought - check out the thermostat setting? That is in series with clutch winding and .............................

New routing diagram for the drive belt on my 2004 Cherokee. new belt is 13 inchs shorter (this is to eliminate the squeek problem), my local garage is reluctant to advise me!

Click on the following Link. It has the two (2) Serpentine Belt Diagrams.

I believe the Mechanic is bypassing your AC Compressor.
When you look at both of the Belt Routes you can bypass the AC with the shorter belt.
In the first Diagram: the Belt would go from the Power Steering Pump, bypassing the AC and going directly to (over the top) of the Water Pump.
In the second Diagram: the Belt would go from the Tensioner, bypassing the AC and going directly to (under the bottom) of the Water Pump.
