That depends on whether you have the single overhead cam or dual overhead cam model. The SOHC belt is good for 100,000 miles, but the DOHC belt should be changed at 60,000. Also, the DOHC engine has an interference fit, meaning that the piston can crash into the valves if the belt slips or breaks - that gets expensive in a hurry.

If you have the 2 liter diesel, you do not have a timing belt; the engine uses either a chain or a gear to drive the camshaft. If your engine develops a buzzing, rattling noise that gradually gets worse, that may be excessive wear in the timing gears or chain. Pushing it too far after this begins can have the same unhappy results as a belt failure.

Here's a reference for timing belt change intervals for many common makes ("N/A" means the engine uses something other than a belt to drive the camshaft).

Unless you have a distinct chain rattle noise then it will last longer than a belt which is 100,000klm so have it checked but it should be good for around 120k

SOURCE: zx5 2004 ford focus alternator broken

disconnect the battery & make sur you have your radio code, then remove the belt.
it's pretty simple there's a nut in the middle of the tensioner wheel, get the right size socket & using a ratchet, move the tensioner by locking the rathet & do or undo the nut, as it's a fixed nut used to swivel the tensioner.
Then undo the wiring on the back of the alternator, usually a click in multiplug and a + power cable boted on with a 10mm nut.
then remove anything in the way of the alternator securing bolts, & remove the bolt's, alternator should be free !
But I don't suggest you do it yourself unless you have a reasonable grasp of mechanics, as I have had to do this job properly after some people have tried themselves & they've made it worse, plus once the belt's off you have no power sterring so you can't drive it to the garage if you can't get the belt back on !
