Reduced Transmission Performance error message on my 2014 Volvo V40 T4 49000 miles / 80000km on the clock Fully serviced without any prior problems

Car was serviced about a month ago at the dealer. Had no problems whatsoever. Just got in the car & the error displayed "Reduced Transmission Performance" Car doesn't shift gears, high revs Switched it off & back on again. Error message was off and gears changed but gear shifted not smoothly and jerky. Revs are also still higher than usual.

Your revs are higher because the transmission is not shifting into the higher gear ranges. There is an apparent problem in your transmission that needs immediate attention. In the U.S., this is called "limp mode" and is designed to keep you from being stranded but to also make you so uncomfortable with the performance that you will take it for service as soon as possible. If it were my car, I would have it towed to a dealer for service. If you can't tow it, drive it SLOWLY to the nearest dealer while watching the tachometer and keeping it under under 2,500 RPM. Good luck.

Sounds like you might have serious internal transmission problems.

As soon as you can, get someone with a code reader to plug in the vehicle and find out what the code is for the Check Engine light to come on. Might give you a better picture of what`s going on.

It could also (cross your fingers) be something more usual like a clogged transmission filter (located inside the pan), or shift solenoid.

By the way, have you checked the level, look & smell of your transmission fluid?

Level should be checked with the vehicle running, after passing it in all gear ranges on the shifter, and putting it back in park (Check it on "cold" or "hot" level depending on if it`s been driving for a while or not).

As for look and smell, it should be reddish and not smell burnt. Hard to describe the smell of burnt transmission fluid, but normal fluid does not smell too strongly, kind of sweet. Burnt oil is usually black and has a strong odor. If the oil is burnt you have internal damage to the transmission.

One piece of advice I give you is get it fixed as soon as possible because if you don`t already have serious internal transmission problems, the longer you wait, the more chances you have of getting some, to the point of the vehicle just refusing to move. And believe me, speaking from experience, the transition point from the symptoms you describe to total refusal to move and the need for a tow/transmission rebuild is not that long usually.

We are looking at purchasing a 2004 Volvo XC70 details below

best advice look for another car somewhere else as it is a pristine lemon
if you still want the car get a quote from an accredited automotive transmission specialist shop as the price quoted may be for a genuine factory out of the box price but a fully reconditioned unit with 12 months guarantee andy be around 1/3 of the price

I suspect you have some loose connections or shorts in the wiring harness. I've had similar strange things happen with an Olds Bravada. Here's how to set the clock on a 2004 Volvo V40. Rotate the odometer stem to the right or to the left and hold it without pushing it in. The clock will start to move slowly then speed up. This seems to have been left out of the owners manual. Hope it helps.
