Re: 2001 Volkswagen Passet brake lights don't work
It should be printd into the fuse cover. If you can't see a fuse blown, then thats not your problem. Check the clearing at the top of the brake pedle to the brake acuator and if there is an overlarge gap it will not work the electrical circut.

Have you checked the bulbs and fuses? The fuse box for them is under the bonnet, usually near the battery. The lid normally just unclips. Try fuses 13, (brake lights), 22 (right), and 23 (left) for the tail lights. Always replace fuses with the same colour and rating.
I think on your model the bulbs are fairly simple to get to. Fold the small cover inside the boot out of the way. The bulb board is simply clipped into place. Bend the two clips inwards and wriggle it out past the boot liner. The bulbs are just a small turn Anti-clockwise and It slides out.
I've attached links to a fuse box diagram and a YouTube video for the rear lights. https://fusesdiagram.com/volkswagen/fuses-and-relay-volkswagen-passat-b5.html
the brake lights don't light up or the taillights don't light up? the brake lights are brighter than the tailights so the tailights won't show up whenbrakes are applied. if no lights work when brakes are applied then check for a bad ground at the light assembly.
If both lights went out it could very well be the fuse, check the fuse box located below the dash and see if the fuse labeled taillight/brake light is blowen if so replace fuse and the lights should be working again.
Hello earl_webre: My name is Roger and I will help you. The only lighter fuse listed in the fuse panel diagram shows fuse 33 as being the correct fuse. The fuse panel is located in the left corner of the dash. See picture. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer you received. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
