can i put my garden hose in the collant tank and start looking for leaks as i take things apart to dig deaper.

  • Bill Boyd Jul 26, 2018

    no
if your radiator tanks are on the sides and not top and bottom and they are plastic , just replace the radiator as it will be a split tank
mains pressure is around the 60psi and that is 5 times what a radiator and cooling system will handle as I said the correct method is a cooling system pressure test to find leaks

SOURCE: coolant leak

Your pipes are corroded remove your water hoses and check where the pipes are corroded and replace. Probably a good time to replace your hoses and coolant when you have the system sound

You should run the engine and watch it to see if you can see where the leak is coming from, it is most likely coming from a hose or the water pump.

2008 Cadillac STS with 4.6l V8 Northstar engine. Do I need to add the anti-leak tablets to the new coolant or is this newer model engine exempt from that requirement?

You have some protection for the aluminum components with new coolant but for all engines with aluminum pieces, the tablets are cheap insurance and recommended to prevent/reduce electrolysis which results in leaks.
Use them.

Found oil in my coolent expansion tank

Generally speaking, if you have engine oil in the cooling system, you have a leak somewhere in the engine, which could be a head gasket.
Is there any sign of coolant in the engine oil ?

Engine hot

First of all you need to check your coolant return bottle level, it's probably low, and needs coolant added. Heater will be starved for coolant, if level is low, thus, cool/cold air comes out. Try to add when engine is cool, to avoid getting sprayed with hot coolant. Leave cap off for a while, turn your heater on (not defrost) and let engine run up to temperature, and add more as needed while you watch level. Rev engine slightly and hold it for 5 seconds or so, every once in a while to help circulate coolant, and remove any air in system. If you have an actual rad cap, that you can remove and watch flow in radiator, that's even better, for adding and bleeding air out same way. Make sure your rad fan is working as well, and once you get it topped up, and heat back working, I'd seriously consider having a system pressure test done, as you obviously have a leak somewhere if the level went down to the point of overheating, and heater was starved for coolant. Keep an eye on that return bottle level until such time you have it checked, to avoid more damage to engine.

2005 Caddy V8 sts no longer remote cranks. lights

I had the same problem with my STS. Go back through your programing menu and "check" remote start again. Somehow, mine defaulted to not allowing remote start feature. It was good to go as soon as I re-programmed it.
