Here's and excerpt from a VW forum

"The EPC light means something is wrong in the drive-by-wire path, the "gas pedal" potentiometers or the electric motor-controlled throttle body, etc. I do not know if that relay qualifies, and I'm not even 100% sure what it does without research, but I assume it powers the ECM up when the ignition is on. Certainly the ECM is part of the electronic power control system, but I don't know if faults with the ECM are going to light the EPC light rather than the check-engine light."
It stands for Electronic Power Control.
There is a whole discussion about the EPC on this web site - May be of help.

If your car is like mine you probably can't get a scan because the ec? won't communicate with the scan tool. My suggestion is to check the fuses and relays first then taka looke at the h?rness you are not getting constant power and that is setting false codes and making the car run great one minute and limp the next

The EPC light gets input from a pressure sensor in the engine block. if the weather has been particularly hot, the pressure can be higher than normal in your engine. Therefore, take off the oil cap, check the oil, then put the cap back on. If you don't have a real problem, the light will go out.

SOURCE: epc light coming on on dashboard .what does it

This light means Electronic Power Control - The onboard computer has detected an issue with one of your electrical systems.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially go on

EPC light is not coming on when I turn on the ignition in my 2006 Jetta

Well the EPC light is for electronic power or pedal control, which refers to the gas pedal and throttle body. The light can come on for a number of reasons including issues with the fly-by-wire gas pedal, throttle body, cruise control, brake light switch, and others.
Not coming on when you turn the key on for a test could be a blown fuse for the computer since the EPC light is not on a fuse. You may have to check them all to make sure. Of course the bulb could be out too.

My epc light keeps coming on and then one day when I was driving a big red light came on that said stop

I have a 2002 Passat, 1.8L Turbo. I had a problem where my EPC light kept coming on, and I would have a lot of trouble starting my car in hot weather. The EPC light stands for Electronic Pedal Control. When you press on the gas/brake, the pedal doesn't pull a wire like in the past, it's all done by computers. The sensor is saying that somewhere along the path from the pedal, to the brake that something is acting up.

I took my car into the VW dealer nearby and they said the sensor was going bad, and that's why the light was coming on. They informed me that once the sensor went bad, my car would stall, and likely not start again until replaced. I decided to have it replaced (about $250), and I haven't had a problem since.
