BMW 530D 1999 (157K miles) groans when it turns corners, roundabouts. Power steering fault? Should I pull it all apart? Still seems to be working. John

It MAY,,,,,, be the start of a power steering pump problem.Just maybe.The pumps can moan and groan without leaking,so keep an eye on it.Hope this helps.
I would get a bottle of liquid power steering conditioner and add to pump. They may have not changed the fluid when replaced pump. Best of luck to you.
If it seems to get louder when you turn the steering wheel then check your power steering fluid level. If determined this is the cause of groaning sound but fluid level is right then you will need to bleed the air or the pump is going bad. Beyond that I need more info for further help.
Water from the tailpipe is good. This indicates a well running engine. The groan when turning could be due to a loose serpentine belt or a power steering pump in need of help. Does it have oversize wheels and tires? It could be hitting the fender cowling.
You need to describe the problem better. Does it groan only when moving and turning, or will it make the same noise just sitting there turning the steering wheel. If it only makes noise when moving, that rules out a ps problem, the ps doesnt know if you are moving or not. Does it make different noise if you are going to the right or left, same noise, different? I dont know about the reservoir, some of them have filters, but I dont know if Buick does or not. If it was, it would cause a whine, not a groan.
It is quite possible that the resevor is out of fluid. If this is so, it is very bad for your power steering pump. If it still makes noise after you refill the steering fluid, then you will have to rebuild or replace the power steering pump.
