Very possibly an intake leak. Check all the large intake bellows for cracks, the attached hoses and connections are ok, and of course make sure the intake filter is clean and clear.

sounds like you an idle arecontrol valve to me, wich by the way is the only thing that really needs cleaned, make sure the air boot is not torn on the smaller part going to that vlv it tears at the bend you will need a mirror to see if in the car still, also check the plug on the same vlv make sure it is plugged in all the way, also also check the connector on the throttle itself the white arrows must be aligned and touching let me know what you find

Several things but 2 occur to me. did it have ample oil and water, and, did it do this while the rev counter was up high?. The first you can sort, the second, it probably has a rev limiter over which , the engine will not go. Slow it down a bit and it it should be back to normal.

Bmw 328 1997 air intake is coughing (like a backfire) then with revs on breaks free and allows it self to accellerate

change your spark plugs and clean your air cleaner element, if nothing happens have your carburators or injectors cleaned
