1998 jeep cherokee can smell exhaust when idled

DescriJeep Cherokee 1998 sport 4.0 6cyl. 168,000 miles, when idle I can smell exhaust it has slight sputter and rough idle. In the past have had codes 700,740,171,133 as of now my engine light is off. 2 days ago I had tune up replaced pick up plugs and wires rotor and cap, oil change, air filter, throttle removed and fully cleaned. This caused my engine light to turn off. Car has been running smoothly until I smelled exhaust while in traffic moments before I noticed a slight sputter. Up until now I have replaced both 02 sensors, had my fuel injection cleaned by Tune Up Master all lines have been checked for leaks there are none PLEASE WHAT CAN IT BE? Thanks for your time. Yesterday I began to use 89 unleaded instead of 87 if that could be of any helpbe your 1998 Jeep Cherokee Problem

Check the exhaust manifold. It is prone to cracking at the expansion joints.Causing you to smell exhaust and confusing the upstream o2 sensor

My 1998 jeep grand Cherokee 4.0 engine has a idle problem. when I start the jeep it runs wide open with no control at the throttle. I Replaced the head on the vehicle.I have checked all vacuum hoses f

you need to check all sensor connections as the crank shaft sensor also will mess up your idle....try slightly unscrewing the tps and push it up or down slightly to see if this fixes the problem.

1998 Jeep Cherokee High Idle

This is a old post but wanted to suggest a fix for anyone who might come across this problem. The problem obviously started with the act of kindness (jump start) and so is more than likely computer related. You'll probably find a "reboot" is in order and that's simple. Just take off your negative battery cable (good time to do a little cleaning while you're at it) and replace it. Start it up and you'll probably find the problem is gone.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 6cyl, when i crank my jeep after about 1 or 2 min it will start idling very rough and the exhaust smells very rich. Seems like the motor is starving for air but there's...

Have you checked the coolant temp sensor. They also have something called a MAP(manifold absolute pressure) sensor that could be causing this issue. This sensor will have a 4 pin connector and 1 vacuum line going to it. Should be on the firewall, just behind the engine.
