Are you sure the TV ( trans shift cable at the throttle valve) cable is correctly adjusted?? Without line pressure readings, I can only guess that the D3/Part throttle check ball is missing, if it is a trans problem
If the TV is correct, I am assuming that the TV cable is pulled tight at WOT.
Did you check the throttle (ACCEL) cable to be sure that the carb goes wide open when your accel pedal is on the floor?? This must be done with someone in the car and a second person looking at the carb. Without doing this, you do not know if you have WOT. Without WOT, the trans will not de-tent and shift down.

SOURCE: need to change the transmission fluid in my 98 corvette

to change your tranny fluid and filter is relativily easy i will tell you step by step here.
1. raise the vehicle and support it with jack stands
2. get a large drain pan
3. locate the transmission oil pand and losen all the bolts removing the rear half of the bolts only and just losening the other bolts to keep the pan held up but allowing it to sag on the rear.
4 be carefull because in this step your likely to get a bath in tranny fluid. insert a flat srewdriver in the back of the pan and carefully pry it lose. now trany fluid is going to pour out of the pan.
5. remove the rest of the bolts be carefull because the trany pan still has a lot of fluid in it.
6. grab ahold of the filter and pull it down.
7. insert the new filter but make sure the rubber gasket came offf with the old filter they have a tendency to stick in the transmission.
8 replace oil pan and torque down evenly
9 refill with correct fluid to the correct level
10 take for a drive and recheck the fluid level and check for transmission fluid leaks
ps when the pan is off clean the inside of it out with brake cleaner really good
If there are no leaks after you get done congratulate your self on a job well done

hope this helps you
please rate me
Thank you

SOURCE: 1966 Falcon with C4 Transmission I changed out fluid and filter

Generally, what causes C-4's and C-6's to be slugish going into gear, is the seals on the servo pistons are getting hard. The servo pistons are what apply pressure on the clutch packs, when the seals get hard the oil can blow past the piston and the clutch won't engage. It's worse when the the trany is cold and usualy gets better as the oil gets warm. You could try some transmission conditioner, the cheep stuff works as good as the high dollar stuff. Don't rev the engine to try to get it to go into gear, the clutch is trying to engage and you will burn the clutch up pack. If the clutches were replaced 3k miles ago why didn't they put seals in it at the same time?

Transmission shifts very hard

Check your transmission fluid level as soon as possible.
If you are experience hard transmission shifts, it is possible that the only problem is a low transmission fluid level. Low transmission fluid level can change the operating pressures of the transmission as well as reduce the amount of lubricant present between the clutches and bands and raise transmission temperatures. All these things can cause hard or jerky shifting. You need to identify why the transmission has a low fluid level and refill it as soon as possible.

98 Ford Windstar 3.8 transmission shifts good but after driving for 20 minutes it stops shifting. The transmission oil doesn't smell burnt. This problem occurs the same way everyday, so what can be the...

Sounds like the fluid has lost its viscosity. When the fluid is cold it is thicker and will cause normal shifting, when you drive for twenty minutes the fluid gets warm and thins out, it gets to "slippery" and the clutch bands do not grab good enough to shift. Auto transmissions also work off of hydraulic pressure, if the filter in the pan is very dirt it will also affect the way it drives. try changing the filter and fluid and see if it helps. A lot of Fords take Mercon V or Mercon 5 fluid. Check the trans dipstick to sure.

I have a 2003 lincoln ls with 110,000 miles and there is a hard **** when it is about to go into 3rd gear; there is also a hard **** when I put in reverse. I am told that I need a solenoid assembly...

You need a new Trans Control Solenoid--one unit with all 3 pressure control and 4 shift solenoids, in one unit.
Remove trans pan, gasket reusable, remove filter, remove 7 torx screws and one 10mm wire harness connector bolt, then pull down old solenoid pack.

Part # 9L2Z7G391A 515.30 list/332.20 cost at trans supply house

Do Not Go to a Dealer, unless your Warren Buffet or Bill Gates

Change the fluid a couple more times, after installing the new solenoid pack, and driving a couple weeks with no issues. Add a bottle of Red Lubgard, to your Mercon V Trans Fluid, at the last fluid change

Also--pull injector fuses, crank over engine, and flush Power Steering Fluid. (Dex/Merc Fluid)

SLUGGISH TRANSMISSION

Discribe sluggish. Changing the fluid has nothing to do with shift stratagy or correct trans operation. Change the filter every time you do the fluid, unless your just pulling the plug every year or so,to change some fluid.
These vehicles have a tendency to have a bad Trans Solenoid Pack. If it bangs into reverse or shifts funny around 35 to 40 on a slight hill, that part may be going bad.
You need a proper working EGR Valve and TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) also.
Don't forget to flush the Power Steering Fluid--although unrelated to the trans.

Trans--Mercon V Fluid
Steering--Mercon (Not V)
