Try shifting into neutral and keeping your foot on the brake and turn the selector switch on the dash to 4wd Lo or 4wd Hi.

If you have auto locking hubs then you need to see if you are getting good vacuum to the front axel and check for a blown fuse or bad accuater

Check your linkage on the transfer case. Have somebody shift it while you watch underneath the truck. The linkage could be out of adjustment or bent. Let me know what you find. Phil

I fought with this problem every year since I had the Sportage. And it was so frustrating to find out just when you really needed it, that you did not have 4-wheel drive. I replaced the hubs with manual hubs and I wish I would have done it at the beginning. They work great and are 100% reliable. Bottom line.. the vacuum hubs were a great idea that just plain did not work reliably. Save yourself alot of grief and money and just replace the hubs. Less than $200 including paying someone to put then on and I now can rely on my Sportage when I need it.

Check the front wheel bearings for play and also while the wheel is off the ground lock the front hubs, grab the axle behind the wheel and see if it is engaged. If not then you will need to take the hub apart and find out what is broken.
