Struts on the front contain shock absorbers as well as the pivot to turn the wheels where as on the rear they are just shock absorbers The replacement part is called an insert
so strut inserts on the front and shocks on the rear
the wheel alignment may be altered during the replacement process so it is suggested to have it done in suspension specialist shop

SOURCE: FRONT END

Drive the car in a parking lot and make left and right hand turns.
If the noise goes away on either turn then the problem is a front hub bearing.
If the noise is still there, it could be possible front differential bearings.

SOURCE: strus or shocks in the front end of the magnum?

According to the replacement parts guide, they are struts and I checked for all wheel drive and 2 wheel drive and all are showing struts.

SOURCE: replacing front struts

Okay....here is the steps first....and then the directions on how to use the tools:

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Detach the shock absorber lower mount by removing the two bolts.
  4. Remove the retainer nut, retainer, cushion and shock absorber.
  5. Detach the cushion retainer from the shock absorber.
  6. Compress the coil spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  7. Detach the stabilizer bar.
  8. Support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle securely.
  9. Remove the cotter pin.
  10. Loosen and remove the nut.
  11. Using a ball joint removal tool, detach the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  12. Loosen the suspension arm set bolt.
  13. Remove the suspension arm set bolt nut.
  14. Remove the nut from the strut bar front set bolt.
  15. Pull out both set bolts.
  16. Remove the lower suspension arm and coil spring. To install:
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torque specifications:
    1. Strut bar front set bolt: 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm)
    2. Lower suspension arm set bolt: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    3. Lower ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    4. Lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).

That and other bushings and idler arms worn. I would suggest a free inspection somewhere for them to show you what needs repaired.

How to replace the shocks on my 2002 jeep grand Cherokee??

shocks are easy my friend. make sure you have shocks in the front not struts. a strut will have a spring around the shock with a large steel plate holding the spring to the strut. first off. the car does not have to be lifted to change the rear and if you have shocks on the front as well. just simply remove the lower and upper mounting hardware then change. i can not say enough make sure you have shocks in the front and not struts. struts are a pain and can be very dangerous to replace if you dont have the correct equipment

How to replace liftgate support rod fro 2005 jeep grande cherokee

Hi ... You need two people, two new gas struts a small screw driver and a thirteen mill open end spanner.....
Change one at a time with the second person supporting the tailgate, dependant on what type is fitted the struts will have a metal "c" clip that needs to be removed at both ends on the ball joint sockets, prise the clips out and remove the strut, and replace in reverse order.... if you have the struts with the ball and sockets at each end you need to support the tailgate with your by now long suffering partnre and undo the nut and socket in the body and tailgate.... they, once loosened will come out easily..... just make sure that when refitting you dont cross threads... repeat same on the other side and then give friend a cold beer..... hope this helps..... How to replace the tailgate strut for a 2005 grand cherokee? (i can't get it off the bearing)

Most hood and trunk struts have a pull out clip located on the strut...this must be pulled out to release the strut from the bearing with no damage...you might inspect the replacement strut for this clip as it is included in the new part...

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition

Probably have bad hood struts/shocks that hold it up. These can be obtained at the usual discount parts stores(Kragen,Autozone, Checker, etc) Usually just pop off on one end of a ball mount and unbolt the other after you have propped up hood. These shocks go bad from time or fluid leaks.

Shocks vs Struts

It has shocks and struts. The struts on are the steel tubes that contain a form of hydralic fluid, the shocks are the large springs.
