This problem is caused by burnt/worn contacts in the starter solenoid, it is a common issue on all Japanese designed gear reduction starters, they (the contacts) can be replaced, go to http://www.iowamotorparts.com/index.htm they have the parts, about $15, u will need a good set of auto skills to do this repair.

Mine did the same thing on May 31. Turns out the cable that passes through the firewall from the steering column to the side of the transmission had come disconected at the transmission. I was able to re-connect it using a tie wrap for a temporary solution. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My 2001 Mazda tribute column
The same thing happened to my 2001 Mazda Tribute. It was stuck in Neutral. The shifter cable fell off the little metal post under the steering column. To fix it I removed the plastic column covers. Put the round end of the cable back on the little silver colored post. Then secured it on the post with a ring type push nut from Ace Hardware. Total cost of repair was sixty cents. The cables are not always broken. They just fall of the little post.

Take the vehicle to Auto Zone or another parts store that will read the engine fault code from the ECM for you. Most will do it for free. Depending on how long it has been since you replaced the plugs and wires on your vehicle you may have a bad spark plug or plug wire that is causing the problem. Easy enough to fix if you don't have to pull the air intake assembly to change the back 3 plugs. If you do have to pull this you should get a chiltons repair manual so you ahve instructions on how to remove and replace the intake assembly.
