SOURCE: hyundai sonata 2002 remote

There is a special (proprietary) programming electronics 'black box' for the keyless entry system on all Hyundai vehicles for programming the remotes. This programming is stored in either the BCM (body control module) or the ETACS module (Electronic Time and Control System).

SOURCE: location of keyless entry module in a 2002 hyundai

It's behind the climate control panel (right behind ashtray. You remove 2, 10mm nuts from the driver side accelerator area. The "set" switch would be behind if it's there at all. The metal bracket comes off with it.

SOURCE: I need instructions to program keyless entry remote for 2002 Hundai Santa Fe

For a 1994 to 2006 Sonata, a 2001 to 2006 Elantra, a 2000 to 2006 XG350 or a 2001 to 2006 Santa Fe, you will need to access alarm system control module. On most of those vehicles it is located on the driver's side fascia panel. But on the Sonata, the facia panel is in the center.

  • 2 Once you have found this module, you will want to ensure that the memory switch is in the OFF position. Then turn the ignition on.
  • 3 Wait 5 seconds and set the memory switch to SET position and then press the remote transmitter lock button to send the code to the alarm system control module.
  • 4 If you would like to program a second remote transmitter then you will need to press second remote transmitter lock button.
  • 5 Next set the memory switch to off, then turn the ignition off. You can confirm your programming by locking and unlocking the vehicle with both of the remotes. good luck my friend

How to Program Keyless Entry Remotes in a Hyundai Sonata By Christian Killian, eHow Contributor
20Found This Helpful The keyless entry system in your Hyundai Sonata is part of the factory alarm system. If you have to replace a lost or damaged remote, reprogramming will be necessary. The remote is important because not only does it lock and unlock the doors, it also arms and disarms that factory alarm when you open or close your car doors. New remotes are available from any Hyundai dealer. While they will program it for you, you can do it yourself and save a programming fee.

Step 1: Locate the fuse panel under the dash on the driver's side of the car. Just below it is the control module for the factory alarm system. Open the cover on the alarm system control module and locate the memory switch inside.
(Kleophaus Livingston/Demand Media) Step 2: Verify that the switch is in the "Off" position; if it is not, switch it to the "Off" position. This is important for the system to understand what you want it to do when you move to the programming mode.

Step 3: Insert the key into the ignition of your Sonata and turn the key to the "On" position. Wait for 60 seconds, then move the memory switch inside the control module to "Set."
(Kleophaus Livingston/Demand Media) Step 4: Depress and hold the "Lock" button on your remote for one full minute. This allows the remote and the control module to communicate and sync. Release the "Lock" button and turn the memory switch in the control module back to the "Off" position.
(Kleophaus Livingston/Demand Media) Step 5: Turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position and test the remote by pressing the "Lock" or "Unlock" button, verifying that the doors do lock or unlock.

I have a 2003 hyundai sonata and i dont have the remote for the stock alarm. My alarm keeps going off and my car wont start. I bought a new battery and even tried the key in the door still no luck.....

The 2003 Sonata is equipped with a 'starter KILL' burglar alarm system with disables the starting system (using a N/C 'contacts' configuration instead of a N/O contacts configuration). N/C=Normally closed, and N/O=Normally open contacts. When the alarm goes off with a MY Sonata, the only way to DISARM it is with the key fob (remote) originally programmed for it (unless you purchase a new remote & have it programmed for the vehicle at an authorized Hyundai Service Department). NOTE: So long as the keyless entry & burglar alarm system is functioning/operating normally, the alarm will keep going off and the STARTER KILL function will still prevent you from starting the vehicle. One option is left without purchasing a new remote and having it programmed.
    1. When the alarm goes off, get into the vehicle and insert the ignition key into the ignition.
    2. Turn the key to the 'RUN' position (NOT the ACC position) and wait for the alarm to STOP (usually about 3 to 5 minutes).
    3. The engine should then start using the ignition key.

If this procedure doesn't work, the problem will need further diagnosis by a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician.

    Hope this helps

My 2002 sonata alarm wont shut off and my keyless wont stop it and the car also wont start with the key either

When the alarm is activated, there is an Anti-Theft device (Starter Kill Relay) which prevents anyone from starting the engine using the key (about 5 minutes). If you place the key in the ignition and turn the key to the "RUN" position, wait 5 minutes (approx), the engine should then be able to start. If not, the problem may be the ETACS (Electronic Time & Alarm Control System) module. If it does start, the problem may simply be that the battery in the keyless remote is weak/dead, or the remote needs to be programmed again for that vehicle. Only the remote can 'DEACTIVATE' the alarm. Best solution, take/tow the vehicle into a Hyundai Service Center (dealership), pay the diagnostic fee. They will tell you EXACTLY what the problem is and what's needed to fix it (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.).
