On the shaft that controls the arm or gear for the gate movement there will be 2 cams
open the gate and then loosen of one cam and adjust it off the micro switch until the gate is fully open
lightly tension the screw and then close the gate
repeat the adjusting on the second cam until the gate is fully closed
tension up the screw and then using the remote open the gate when it is fully open leave it or in it is not make small adjustment to get it open
press the remote to close the gate and again adjust to properly close the gate

this is a partial solution. Remove the inside panel on the tail gate -- simply remove several screws and pop off the panel. yes, you might break some plastic clips. That exposes the locking mechanism and it's a simple matter to open the tail gate from the inside now. See the rod with the threaded fitting? Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to adjust the rod that operates the lock, so I've just left the inside panel off for now ;-)

look for a loose wire and faulty earth check for wires shorting out to earth
Testimonial: "Can you advise me how to check for a wire that may be shorting to earth? I disconnected the battery terminal and switched off the mains and then re-connected and seems to be working ok now but for future reference and just general knowledge I would like to learn how to test for a shorting wire. I have a multi-meter."

you have a cut or bad connection where the wires come from the inside of car and causing a short,so you might have to open the outer cover surrounding the wires,.,,,,,,adrian
