Clutch switch keeps it from cranking.
You can bypass the cluctch switch. Make double sure transmission is in neutral. On many jeeps, under the hood is fuse/relay box. One of the relays is the starter motor. Pull the relay. With a pair of pliers, take a paper clip and short the pins that go to starter. They wire can get hot. If the starter cranks, you might be right (see ignition switch and any interlocks - like clutch switch), if the starter doesn't crank, get a new starter.
fuses - including the eingine fuse itself,. otherwise you may want to tap on the starter while someone trys to turn it over,. otherwise remove, test (if good) replace starter) was the starter solenoid replaced with the starter? are all the connections including the battery ground cleaned/ inspected? You may have a bad starter or bad solenoid, even new (rebuilt) that can happen.. best regards Ck
could be the neutral switch try and crank it while moving the shifter around also try and put power to the small terminal on the starter that will tell you if the starter is bad or the wiring or switches
The starter is where the engine joins the gearbox, usually on the engine side. Check that he wiring it connected at the starter and the ingnition switch. Make sure the battery terminals are good and clean and tight. Otherwise the starter solinoid may be faulty, or the starter itself.
I have a 93 pathfinder SE 4X4 automatic transmission that had full power, new starter and battery. Sometimes it will start and sometimes not. By passed starter relay by adding push button start and it started 6-8 times then nothing. I finally figured out that it was the neutral safety or inhibitor switch on the 4 wheel drive shifter. Just an idea..good luck
First, using a digital volt/ohmmeter, check the power at the main lead on the starter. It should read full battery voltage. If not check all connections at the battery and to the starter. Next, check the small trigger wire on the starter with the key turned to start. There should be 12v there as well. If not, Check the starter relay and the ignition switch. If you have 12v at the main wire and the trigger wire, replace the starter, providing that you can turn the engine by hand. I can't tell you what has failed but I've just told you how I'd find the problem. Good luck!!
Recheck all your connections, battery. starter, look for fuseable link on small wire going to starter. Might want to chk.that wire with test light when key switch is in start position and see if it lights. If it does not light might be starter switch under dash on steering colume.
