Check in your user's manual for your fuse location on the rear windshield wiper. These grand cherokee's have electronic actuators in every door. Inside these actuators they have very little motors and move everything via plastic. Very bad design flaw, as most of these actuators are 300-400 dollars to replace. You can find ones in salvage yards for 50 though. On your rear hatch, the door and the window are run by this actuator.

You have a quick fix item. There is a send code button on your garage door opener. You simply have to press that button, and within 5 secs, press and hold the button on the garage door opener (your car or other) until the opener rapidly blinks. The garage door and the opener will share info,,, and presto,, you can open by the remote opener. Take a peek at your garage door opener instructions. You can have up to three settings at one time... one for each button. I was asked if the buttons ever got the openers mixed up,, and the answer is absolutely not.

I had the same problem twice with my 2002 mountianeer. The first time Ford fixed it for free. It is a known problem with the Mountianeer and Explorer. The second time it happened 2 years later, Ford was going to charge me for the repair. So I took pictures of my car along with several other cars I saw in shopping centers and I wrote a certified letter to my dealership and also to Ford Customer Service in Detroit. I made sure my dealership was aware I was also contacting Detroit after their refusal to fix the defect for free. I also included in the letter all kinds of forum posting from websites where owners had the same problem and the pictures I took. I received a call within a week from my dealership saying they would be happy to fix it for free! I guess the squeaky wheel does get the oil.
