Gear shift stuck in park when manual override is

Most vehicles have a small rectangular hole near the base of shifter for override. Sometime you need to flip up the little cover on it. You need to find the shift lock override. There is usually a small plastic cover or hole somewhere near the shifter. Remove the cover and insert a thin screwdriver into the hole, depressing the lock override, while shifting it out of park. If this works then the soleniod at the shifter or the switch at the brake pedal is bad. Yes the vehicle will start in Nuetral.

The shift interlock solenoid is likely failed.
If you do not hear a click when you put your foot on the brake (and the brake lights illuminate) look in your manual for the location of the shift interlock override button. It is usually behind a removeable panel near the shifter.

Stick a pen inside and push the button to temporarily override the solenoid.

Sounds like you need a new shifter assembly, or the brake switch. Most likely will be the shifter though if you can move it out of park with the override.

Your problem is at your key. The switch in the steering colmb is cracked or worn out. When it happens, try rotating the key counter clockwise just a little bit and watch everything start to work.

Normally to shift do you have to press the brake to get it out of park? and if so then it could be a bad switch on the brake pedal.
