2001 Volvo s60 starter is stuck on

The way to do this is to search for each and then go to the same company for both. They look identical. Sometimes companies will say 'for years 20xx to 20xx'.

Disconnect the battery cables before removing the starter. Remove the Positive cable which also is connected to the starter positive connection. Either directly or through a solenoid. You have to remove the bolt that holds the positive to be able to completely remove the starter. in other words it may still have a bolt holding it tight. (3 bolts)

Volvo starters have unusually high problems with the connector cables. Check all the wiring going to the starter. Including the cable negative wire.
I have heard of cases where the starter is removed and the car still does not start . This is because of a bad connection somewhere between the battery, ground, and the starter.

Until you can get it fixed, the fastest way would be to disconnect the power, most likely a red wire bolted to the A/C Compressor. If it is bolted vs a plastic connection, then be sure to cover the exposed end of the wire with electrical tape to ensure you don't have a live wire bouncing around while driving, this can short your whole system out. Take off the oil filter and if need be remove the motor nmount on the opposit side and raise the motor on that side to tilt the engine.

It's a real pain in the ****. I have a 1990 S80 that I changed one on. They are held in place with rivets. You have to drill them out to remove the regulator (not too bad). It's hard to work on because there are only so many holes in the door.

Once the new one is in place, you need to rivet it in place.

One of the rivet holes is a couple of inches deep inside the door, and you cannot get a standard harware store type rivet gun in there.

What a pain. I tried using a small bolt and nut, but it fell off after a while.

You may be able to get by with a small bolt and a nylon insert nut.

If you know w local mechanic who works on Volvo's best to have them do the job. It stinks!!

TRY HITTING THE STARTER MOTOR WITH A BIG SPANNER IT MIGHT BE STUCK. FIND OUT WHERE IT IS FROM THE MANUAL. IF NOT TRY HITTING METAL BITS IN THE ENGINE LOOKS A BIT LIKE A BARREL. DO NOT HIT IT TO HARD TAP QUITE HARD. IF NO RESULT ASK SOMEONE TO TAP IT AS YOU TURN THE KEY. IF IT STARTS IT MIGHT GO A WHILE BUT YOU MIGHT NEED A NEW ONE IF IT KEEPS HAPPENING.

It's not that bad at all. After you remove the three bolts for the power steering pump and the two bolts for the drive belt tensioner it is sitting right in front of you.
