2001 Dodge Dakota 4WD Quad Cab: when "cruising" (2WD mode, just maintaining speed) the engine RPM's jump a couple of hundred RPM's, up/down without increased stepping on the accelerator. When trying to "slowly" accelerate (barely pushing the accelerator) either there is no change (other than mentioned above), or engine RPM's Jump 500+ with tranny dropping to lower gear (almost like one tried to punch it). My gas mileage is really starting to ****. Mechanic says there are no codes. Tranny shift points re-programmed at garage. No change. Sensor problem? Change filters (air, fuel)? Dirty injectors? Tranny problems? Suggestions/comments/questions?
Could be a lot of things. I personally would start with your vacuum lines... check for a leak somewhere. You can do that by spraying carb cleaner (if motor tries to die, you found your leak), or it could be a sensor, likely idle air control, mas air, etc.)

And because I'm a Mechanic.
I drive all Kind of vehicles.
The DIFERENCE on a 2WD and 4WD. is:
4WD- Better traction than 2WD.
4WD- better power for hauling. than 2WD
4WD- Better stabilitly and handling than 2WD,
4WD- are 4 wheel ABS. 2WD only few , some only rear ABS.
If you live on SNOW and ICE.
I recomend buy a 4WD vehicle.
It's gonna be BETTER on your zone..

If you're going to change out your 4 wheel drive for 2 wheel drive, you will need to remove your transfer case, front drive shafts, and transmission. You will need a new drive shaft, and crossmember as well. Junk yard would be your best bet for the parts, but it doesn't make sense to eliminate your 4 wheel drive. It would be more beneficial to replace your transmission with a used one, or have your existing one rebuilt.

try putting in nuetral and then shift into high gear . if still does not work sounds like the 4x4 acctuator is bad

This trans has a safety built in to default to second gear if the computer sees any kind of problem. Have it scanned. It can be an input or out put speed sensor, or even a temp sensor on the engine. If there are codes that say ratio error, take it back to who rebuilt it and hope they will take care of you. I use to give a major discount if they were not too far out of warranty.
