Go to the autozone website at autozone.com and register your car. It's free and will give you access to an online repair manual for your car. The steps and procedures for changing the timing belt can be found there. ( I checked). Hope this helped and best wishes.

H my name is carl my 2002 Hyundai accent will crank over everything comes on but wont start there's no spark, and no power to fuel pump and i changed the crank shaft position sensor and still nothi

Have you checked the timing belt, it is most likely has stripped out teeth and not turning the camshaft(s). Pull the belt cover off the front of the engine and see if the camshaft pulleys rotate when cranking the engine over.

I have a problem with my hyundai accent. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE TIMING BELT, TIMING CAIN HAS BROKEN. WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE COULD RESULT FROM THIS. THE ENGINE HAS A LOT OF MILES ON IT AND IT IS A 2002...

DAMAGE!!

The cylinders will misfire, I did it on a Honda Civic and lost a cylinder. Rigged it so the car would run on only 3 cylinders and I returned my lease not long after. The timing belt is disastrous if it isn't changed. It used to not be a belt, it was a timing CHAIN, and no one ever worried about it. Now we have a belt and when it goes, be somewhere else...

Bottom line, expensive if it has really gone, if it just needs a new timing belt, no big deal, usually 90000 miles I believe is when you would change it, but not sure on the Accent.

Good luck!!

Does a Hyundai 2002 1.6L DOHC have a timing belt or chain? If it's a chain, does it need to be replaced?

If you have an Accent which I believe that you do, it has a belt which needs to be changed every 60-80k miles. This vehicle has what is called an interference engine which basically means that if the belt breaks, the engine will continue to turn BUT the camshaft stops. If any of the valves are open the piston will slam into the open valve (interfere) and you will be looking at a new engine. I would recommend changing the water pump at the same time as well as the tensioner. I would also have the pulleys inspected by a professional mechanic and replaced as needed. If you just change the belt and the tensioner or the pulleys are weak then you can have premature breakage.

2002 Hyundai Accent Problem

first thing i need to know is did the timing belt break?
second is are you sure you aligned the timing marks and after the belt tensioner was tight you rechecked to make sure the timing stayed where you had it.
next step would be a compression check to if a valve was bent whenchanging the belt
i have seen this happen and this engine is an interferance engine.
