First the sensors on the exhaust manifold or before the cat converters are heated oxygen sensors ( not O2 sensors but HO2S sensors)
there are O2 sensors after each cat converter before any muffler

Testimonial: "They are unheated according to my Ford dealer by using my vin#.Two sensors front bank and two sensors rear bank.My question still remains. Are there any sensors at the third cat converter located at the resonator/muffler ?"

  • Bill Boyd Mar 26, 2018

something you can check for your self
if the front exhaust manifold sensors have 4 wires they are heated , if only 2 they are o2 sensors
are you sure that there is a cat converter at the muffler as the one at the front would be doing the job and any others would be converting nothing
the first sensor (HO2S) is used to examine the exhaust composition and report to the ECM so that the air/fuel mixture can be adjusted
the cat converter lights up and burns off the gasses and the O2 sensor reads what is left and also reports to the ECM to fine tune

It is probably the sensor before the cat. if it has a heater. The heater circuit going bad is a common problem, it does not affect the way the car runs after it warms up, it is an emission device to heat the O2 sensor up quicker than the hot exhaust gas would. It should be replaced because it will keep your check engine light on and you would not be able to pass an emission test.

SOURCE: location of the bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor on a 2001 ford escape

B1 means the sensor is located on the same bank of the engine that has the #1 cylinder. B2 is located on the opposite bank.
S1 means the sensor is located BEFORE the catalytic converter
S2 means the sensor is located AFTER the catalytic converter

You didn't say which engine you have, so I've included the diagrams of both 4 cyl and 6 cyl so you can see the banks

also check the cat by removing the o2 sensor befor the cat and look in the hole. if there is any deformity to the cat ( melted, holes, missing) replace it right away the nature of the 2.5l it sucks the cat matirial back into the motor damaging the rings and bearings. the most comon cause of cat failure on that modle is head gasket failure so before sinking 750$ in a cat have the head gasket checked.

  • You have four sensors on your truck. Two behind the manifold and one on each CAT. Neither are hard to change. Pull the connector and twist the old one out with a deep socket. Which downstream sensor depends on the "bank" you are going to be working on.

I am getting a P0138 code. Where is the O2 Bank 1, Sensor 2 located?

v6 DURATEC 30 ENGINE 3.0LITERS.
ALL THIS IS IN THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR SURE. BUT
HERE ARE SOME self help rules.
some v6 have Y = exhaust or dual .
first off bank 1 is that bank with cylinder#1 and is always in front of engine , front means crank pulley end of engine
#1 is always offset more front other bank
Sensor 2 is always rear of Cat , CALLED DOWN STREAM (OF CAT)

RR CYLINDER IS #1 AND BANK 1 IS REAR. FWDCAR.

NOT HYBRID CAR RIGHT?

O2 sensor?

O2 sensors are always after the cat converter and HO2S sensors are always before the cat converter.
p0135 refers to heated oxygen sensor(HO2S) 1 bank 1-heater control--circuit malfunction
If it is a straight 6 cylinder engine with 2 cat converters it will be the sensor before the cat converter that connects to the manifold from pistons 1.2.3
If it is a V6 it will be the sensor that is in front of the cat converter that connects to the rear bank pistons 1.2.3. Use the special socket when removing/replacing the sensors to prevent wiring damage

Oxygen Sensors

check for an oxygen sensor (HO2S) before the cat converter and a Sensor (O2S) after the cat converter . If you have two cats then there will be 2 sensors for each converter. The Ho2S is a heated sensor and is different to the O2S sensor.. Use the special sensor tool so that the wires are not damaged

Hello! Both faults are pointing at the same Oxygen Sensor...Upstream Bank 2...Meaning in the exhaust header before the Cat. converter on the right side of the engine...O2 sensors generally cause a P-code as an effect rather than a cause...But in this instance it's a defective O2 Sensor...Replace...
