Gead short in the wire from the gauge to the sender unit
the gauge works by the variable resistance in the tank unit so when the gauge is full there is low resistance so the gauge reads full
reading full all the time indicates that there is power flowing through the gauge to a ground before the sender unit in the tank

SOURCE: 1966 Ford Mustang Gas Guage not working

I had a similar problem. In my 1966 Mustang gas tank, the fuel pick-up was on a "float." My float developed a hole, filled with gasoline, and sank to the bottom of the tank, therefore, the gauge always read empty, but the car ran well. All the other gauges of course worked correctly. The repair was a relatively simple soldering job (after removing the float from the tank), but if that is indeed the problem, ensure all the gasoline is drained from the float before beginning the soldering job.

SOURCE: fuel gauge on 1993 Dodge Dakota V8

Definitely the gauge can be changed, provided the float in the fuel tank is OK, i.e. no leaks. This float connects to a potentiometer which records the current flowing thru it and displays it in the gauge. So before replacing the gauge measure the current and match that against the quantity of fuel in the tank...............sodeep

SOURCE: put in new float unit on fuel pump.gas gauge still not working

did you replaced just the float , because if the resistor that messures the level is not good you didn't do any thing you have to change the level sensor next to the pump..,Im sure that;s all the problem, you should also check the wiring next to the pumpand any connector down there

Why will my gas gage stay at full on my 2001 excursion

The gauge is faulty or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad ! There is away to test it, find a wiring diagram an locate the two wires at the fuel pump sending unit connector . Go to radio shack or some other electronics store an buy some resistors of differing resistance , I'm not sure of resistor sizes , I will look it up on my ford service info system. If you jump the right resisters into the fuel sending unit circuit you can make the gauge show 1/4 - 1/2 - 3/4 an full. If it move to those positions with the right size resistors it's not the gauge but the sending unit in the gas tank ! Diagnosis of Stuck Fuel Gauge Is it Gauge or Sending Unit

The fuel gauge on my 01 caravan 2.4l reads full when running, and only reads 1/4 when off, any ideas what it could be?

Many cars do this to discourage gas theft. If the car fuel gauge only shows 1/4 full, a potential thief may not bother to steal 2 or 3 gallons of gas. This is very normal.

If the gauge is stuck on full and you are sure the tank isn't full, you have a sensor sending wrong information to the dash gauge. Most cars now have a single fuel pump and sending unit that can be replaced by a mechanic.

Toyota 4 runner gas gauge is stuck on full.

The solution to your problem most likely is the fuel gauge sending unit which is located on the fuel pump in the tank. SOMETIMES, the fuel pump and gauge are sold separately, but chances are, you may have to replace the whole assembly. Which is actually good measure, considering that you'll have the tank removed, anyway.

I hope this helps! :)

1996 ford ranger fuel gauge stuck on empty

It's not really easy to tell, you need to test for power and ground at the sending unit at the fuel tank, while someone is watching the fuel gauge inside the vehicle. 90% of the time (especially on Ford's) it's a faulty sending unit in the fuel tank, which is usually sold with the fuel pump...if not, I would replace the pump while I had the tank out anyway just as a precautionary measure.
. the "float' is the part that of the sending unit that registers fuel level and sends that

NEED TO REPLACE FUEL PUMP FOR 1996 fORD eXPLORER, V6 4.0. WHERE IS IT AND HOW DO I GET TO IT?

Great SUV, I have the same model; for Ford Ranger/Explorer/Mountaineer 1991-1999 check this procedure to Fuel Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION...
(see Figures 1, 2 and 3)

To gain access to the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.
  1. Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  2. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump attaching flange, to prevent it from entering the tank during service.
  3. Turn the fuel pump locking ring counterclockwise using a locking ring removal tool and remove the locking ring.
  4. Remove the fuel pump and bracket assembly.
  5. Remove the seal gasket and discard it.
To install:
  1. Put a light coating of heavy grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly. Install it in fuel tank ring groove.

Fig. 3: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Explorer and Mountaineer
  1. Insert the fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Tighten the ring until secure.
  2. Install the tank in the vehicle.
  3. Install a minimum of 10 gallons of fuel and check for leaks.
  4. Install a pressure gauge on the throttle body valve and turn the ignition ON for 3 seconds. Turn the key OFF , then repeat the key cycle five to ten times until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 psi. Reinspect for leaks at the fittings.
  5. Remove the pressure gauge. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Hope help with this; remember comment and rated this help. TY for using Fixya.

Fuel indicator

OK, your fuel indicator is wired to a sending unit that is located inside the fuel tank. this assembly is part of the fuel pump assembly. the fuel indicator sending unit is housed in the same assembly as the fuel pump. The fuel indicator will not function properly if there is a bad ground or, if there is a fault within the sending unit. there is a floater device attached on this assembly and, it raises with the fuel level and lowers when the fuel level is low, sending resistance signals to the indicator gauge on your dash board. these signals can be disrupted if the ground is corroded or, if the sending unit is damaged. In most cases, replacing the sending unit will fix this issue. if the fuel indicator is stuck on the full mark, check the ground. if the fuel gauge is laying on empty all the time, replace the sending unit.

Fuel gauge problem

sending unit on the fuel pump in the tank is stuck, and needs to be replaced. its expensive, but that will fix your issue. its the housing around the pump that has the float arm on it. you can try to free the float arm by removing your pump assembly, but cant guarantee its any good after being stuck
