Easy way to check nois in front diff on a 1999 BlazerZr2. Have front drive shaft off.

Noise developed in 4wheel drive. Clunk like sound. Cut 4 wheel drive and continued home. Pulled shaft and u-joints look ok. Left off and no noise. Have driven 40+ miles since. I also pulled rear shaft and found one joint with dry cap and destroyed bearing, put 2 new joints in and no noise. Front still disconnected. Live by Syracuse NY. Still have snow. Have new car and can move. I don't know if jacked up would show any info. Please give me best guess. Tks Vic

Turn a tight right hand circle and listen for noise then turn a tight left hand circle and listen for noise. This checks the CV joints in the axles. Ujoints are cheap you might as well replace them while the shaft is off.

Testimonial: "Done that to get 4 wheel to engage. Sometimes first try,others4 or more. No noise now that front shaft removed."

Brad. Are cv joints interior of exterior? Estimated cost of joint and do the joints bolt or press on? Thanks Vic

SOURCE: severe bearing noise from front wheel bearing/cv

you have to replace bearing and hub as a unit.you have to remove remove brakes and caliper rotor set them aside dont disconnect brake line. get a piece of clothes rack wire to hold brake caliper .do not let it hang by brake hose. you got to remove hub nut. best way to do that is loosen it a litttle while tire still on weight of car keep wheel from turning .

SOURCE: 98 gmc sonoma w 2 pc drive shaft 2wd noise from

remove the rear shaft from a 1990 full size gmc van (g-van) make sure the one you select has the scew on sleeve at the front of the rear section of the shaft
this will be the right lenght
take the rear yolk off your old shaft cut of the ball socket now get the same u-joint your truck calls for and mount the rear yolk (the section of the shaft that bolts to your rear end) to the new shaft
this works ive done it
you eliminate 2 of the 4 u-joints and lighten up your shaft this releives strain on you tranny and rear end when these u-joints and ball bearings fail they cause the vibrations which ruin the rest of your drive train also you gain 10hp
i spent 300 bucks rebuilding the OEM shaft and got no where so for 25 bucks i did this

SOURCE: whining/grinding noise at deceleration

We have the same problem at our shop. We haven't rebuilt the front differential yet. We tried 3 different shafts on 2 different Jeeps and the noise is on both just the same. By greasing the front driveshaft cv joint, we got he noise to quiet some, but it is still way to loud. With the driveshaft out, the noise is gone. We are about to buy a new shaft from the dealer for $600. There are some service bulletins about some noisy driveshafts.

SOURCE: steering creeks when turning left or right. front wheel noise.

My advise is when u get a humming noise when banking left or right. Its beter to change both left and right wheel bearing and ball joints. Cause if u think about it those parts are put on at the same time . So if u think about it they have the same where in Terre . left or right hope this helps you.

99 Ford F-150 won't go into 4wheel drive I looked undernieth and front drive shaft is not turning

Someone will have to go under and check the linkage is working when the 4 wheel drive is fully engaged and not just moved to a neutral position.

Front wheels not turning in 4wheel drive 1996 dodge dakota

Check and make sure the transfer case is adjusted right If the front end was broke you would know it. Jack up one front wheel and put it in 4wheel drive but not lock and see if the front drive shaft turns if it doesn't you need to adjust linkage or if it's electric make sure the signal is getting to the transfer case. If it only locks front and rear jack up one rear wheel also and do the check. Most people with 4 wheel drive don't know they have two wheel drive One in the rear and one in the front unless you ordered a locking dif from the factory they don't come this way. Then you would have 3 wheel drive

Noise in front diff

Three probable issues;
1-The transfer case is low or out of fluid.
2-The drive shaft may be out of alignment due to worn front or back U joints (thus the clunk on shift)
3-the shift lever is out of alignment with the shift mechanism on the transmission housing.

i still think that you need to look at the frt drive shaft assembly, i am not saying that you may still have a front diff problem but the problem that you are stating happens only when you have all four wheel locked in correct. pulling the frt diff cover is simple, you will be able to check the fluid condation and do visual inspection, but do not forget the transfer case and frt drive shaft trun the frt diff good luck
