You more than likely have a bad VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
if you google it you'll find prices. Not a big job to replace.

My personal suggestion would be to go for these repair catalogs. I know this website www.reliable-store that i used to get manuals from, and they have all models online.
I also brought for my 1989 BMW, such old model, they had it and it was very good manual. Go ahead, I bet.

If you do not see a dip stick then you will have to look under the car, it will be a 17mm inset nut, have the car running in N when putting the fluid in

SOURCE: '96 geo prizm manual transmission-does the trans.

It isn't usually necessary on a manual transmission to change the fluid, however, if you do, you might notice a bit smoother shifting. It will probably have little if any impact on the life expectancy of the transmission. It won't hurt to do it, so if it makes you feel better go for it. It is important, however to make sure it stays full.

Gear lube where to add

on a 1991 geo prizm auto trans.. differental oil should be put in through the speedometer gear housing. this is the simple way. now i actually put mine in in by reaching behind the driver front wheel and you can see the fill plug "bolt" keep in mind i had a wrench bent for this. mine leaks gear oil and have to add it once a month. anyways, i took about a 1/2 inch tube two and half feet long. with an elboe on it so i could pop it in the hole and fill it. anyone that has a geo prizm 88-93 i think should get this differental oil check or check it. i was on intersate and went from 65 mph to 45 mph very quick. the gears ate the housing up. had to look two weeks to find a trans for it. then found one sitting on the side of the road with a rod through the engine after driving four hours only to find out it was the same way mine was. Has anyone else had this problem?

Removing a 1.6 liter from 95 Geo Prizm

If it was an automatic I would say it would come out. But since it is a stick, I don't think you are going to be able to seperate the engine and trans far enough to clear the clutch. I'm afraid you are going to need to remove the transmission with the engine or remove the transmission first.
