How to prime an oil pump on 04 Chevy Silverado 4.8 off the engine?

The relief valve in the pump is stuck open or missing the spring. Is the plastic coupling for the drive in place? Oil pressure should be 30 psi. or better. Also check the pick up tube for looseness in pump. Air leak will not prime the pump.

After changing the oil and filter, reset the monitor by proceeding as follows:

Turn ignition On, but do not start engine.

Fully depress and release accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.

If CHANGE ENGINE OIL lamp flashes for five seconds, this indicates system has reset.

Start engine. OIL LIFE should change to 100%.

If CHANGE OIL SOON lamp lights again, repeat reset procedure.

2001-08 Silverado, w/Driver Information Center

Turn ignition On, but do not start engine.

Press MODE button until DIC (Driver Information Center) reads OIL LIFE LEFT/HOLD SET TO RESET.

Press and hold SET button until 100 percent is displayed. You will hear 3 chimes and CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message will go off.

By the time you hear noise from the engine it will be too late for that engine. You may need an oil pump replacement. Have a mechanic check the oil pressure. It's cheaper than replacing the engine.

Put a gage in the sending unit hole and see if the oil pump is weak, that is the best way to tell if the engine pump is ok.

remove the pump and the cover off the gears
fill the spaces of the gear teeth with Vaseline or clean grease
this is priming the pump so that a vacuum is created to suck up the oil
new pumps will not be primed
the grease /Vaseline will dissolve in the oil and will not cause any problems

You have to prime the oil pump using a special tool... it goes down the distributer hole yes, you have to remove it.. make sure you mark it carefully!!!!!!!!!..

They talk about cranking the engine enough to get the oil up before the fuel pump sends fuel, It didn't say anything about 2 oil sensors, but there is quite a bit of complaining about the electricals. Hope this helps.
