Key won't turn on 2003 Hoda Pilot

My key won't turn the ignition on my 2003 Honda Pilot. I have three keys - none work. I need to get it to a mechanic but I'm looking at a pretty hefty towing charge as it happened out of town (of course). Is there another solution for getting it to start.

I've noticed from other postings that the 2003 Pilot seems to be prone to this problem after around 70,000 miles. Any other info you can share?

Thanks,

JP

Try this. Rock the car backwards by hand and see if that works. Our car was parked with the front wheel against the cement curb and it put pressure on the steering wheel. When we pushed the car backwards and took the pressure off it worked ok since then.

Sometimes the steering wheel will put pressure on the switch from the steering lock. Try this:
- insert the key that usually works
- with your foot on the brake, make sure the shifter is fully in park
- while turning the key, move the steering wheel left or right firmly

SOURCE: 2003 Honda Pilot key stuck in ignition

I had the same problem. It was like my key gained too much weight and wouldn't fit in the ignition. Honda wanted to replace the entire ignition after I tried my spare key. Someone told me about trying a locksmith. I did that. The car was there for about an hour and it cost around $90. They cleaned the ignition and bent back some peice of metal (can't remember what it was called) that was causing the problem.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: my 1997 honda accord wont start.....

Hi Matt

Follow the( + ) positive lead from the battery, to the starter, check the connections, if all OK, get someone to turn the ignition key to start, and give the starter a tap, on the selenoid, with a small hammer or a metal socket extension.

Good Luck !

Let me know the outcome !

Also a FixYa rating would be nice !

SOURCE: ignition key won't turn in 03 honda pilot

Call a locksmith. You may have to call several but I had one fix mine and it only cost about $200.00! To me that was a bargain because the dealership quoted me about $700.00.

2003 honda accord/ key wont turn, steering wheel is locked

To fix your problem, you have to turn the steering wheel either to the left or right as much as you can, then try to turn the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel locks, the key won't turn. By manually holding the steering wheel out of the lock position, the key will turn again and you're steering column will be back to normal.

Your steering wheel key cylinder is bad. You will need to replace it, but when you replace the key cylinder the Honda Dealer might need to reprogram all your keys to the car again or the car will not start.

KEY WONT TURN IGNITION

Your car uses a transonder key, a key with a small chip embedded inside. The transponder is matched to the immobilizer unit in your car. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the immobilizer searches for that transponder, if it's not near the ignition, the car will just keep turning over and not start. Your only real options are to replace the steering lock or buy a transponder bypass unit, which I do not recommend. Just do a google search.

Dealer cut a new key for Pilot but it won't work

If the key fits mechanically, and the lock turns, then the key has been cut correctly. However if it just won't start the vehicle, then the transponder chip within the key will need programming. The dealer should have the equipment to do this. Do not accept a key that does not start the car - and certainly don't pay unless it does.

My 2003 Honda Pilot locks by itself.

This is something that happens to me on the same car - if you use the fob to unlock the door, ti will lock automatically in about 20 seconds if you do not pull an outside handle to open the door - it is part of the security system - I have not found a solution other than one similar to yours - a "dumb" key in my wallet to unlock the door when it happens
