My 2002 grand prix has a center console gear shift. When I push the button on the gearshift, the button won't push all the way in & it raises up. I can't get the car out of park. My key isn't stuck, I don't hear or feel any clicking. It done this once before and it was due to the gearshift handle was raised up, after I got mad an pushed down on it , it worked fine. But that's not working this time. I'm disabled and have to have a car I can get out of park. Need help. Thank you.

Check all fuses and make sur eyou don't have a blown fuse, first if they are all good then there is a switch on the top of the brake paedal that releases the lock on the shift (Its a safety so that if a kid is in the car with out pressing on brake they could engage the shift to drive) THat switch may be bad. theres a switch that controls the shifter when the brake is applied. try putting the car into gear with the key on accessory, not on. if it goes into gear the switch needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: 2008 impala won't start or shift out of park, key is difficult to remove from ignition.

Sound like a problem with the Neutral Ssafety Switch, this is located on top transmission (generally) and its possible that need some adjust.
