the o2 sensors are locted in the exhaust system. upstream is before cat converter, downstream is after cat converter.

This is a communication error with the BIU (body integrated unit). Need to take to the dealer, possible that the ECU needs to be replaced to fix this issue. It should be covered under the federal emmission wrty.

Test to see if you have voltage at the bulb connector in low beam position. I'd almost bet that if there is no voltage there for the low beams that you have a bad high/low switch.

Here you go:

2.5L Engine To Remove:

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner housing.
3. Vehicles with 5-spd transmission: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and set aside.
4. Disconnect the knock sensor wire harness retainer from the coolant hose.
5. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) wire connector.
6. Remove the mounting bolt and knock sensor from the engine block.

I don't think the dohc engine in your 97 will work. And I'm not saying that because I have a sohc engine for sale. It came out of my 2000 Impreza RS. Unfortunately my daughter totalled the car (she's OK) and I retained the vehicle from the insurance company. the car (and engine) had 120,044 miles at the time of death. the timing belt was done at 105,000.
