92 cavalier is hard to start and dies off after a few moments.

I just bought this car as a side project mostly for the body, but it would be nice to get the engine to a running state. 2.2L by the way. it's hard to get started, with occasional popping from the exhaust. when it does start, it runs fine for a few moments at idle, then it want's to die off until you give it some gas. I'd just like to know where to begin checking things, simplest to hardest please.

SOURCE: Starts fine, Idles fine, Drives Fine for a while

you might want to chk. the crank sensor and or cam sensor. sounds more to me that it could be fuel problem. chk. fuel pressure. pump could be on its way out. don't be fooled by hearing the pump running as they sound like they are pumping but there not, at least not enought pressure to keep it running. pressure should be around 50 p.s.i.

SOURCE: Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start

Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.

97 cavalier starts and runs ok from a cold start after a few minutes of warm up it starts to run rough and miss. If i try to drive it it will start out ok but won't shift automaticly but shifts fine m

Sounds like possibly more than on problem, crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module likely on starting prob which maybe affecting shifting due to hard code in ecm, or shift prob could be shift solenoid in valve body of transmission. Both parts readily available from local parts store

need to check and see if you get electrical power down to the starter. It may be a fusealble link built into the wiring next to the starter that went bad.

Car was running fine Now it wont start Turns over but seems like no gas

Is the check engine light on? Rent a scanner to read out any codes which should point to certain problem areas. Can you hear the fuel pump run for a few moments (when the key is turned on), then shut off? If not, check the fuse and relay for same. Possible fuel filter problem. Try some starting fluid or gas in the throttle body which should make it fire a few times. Hope some of this helps!

92 honda civic ex starts but won't stay running - replaced relay

well not completely sure but would suggest first giving it a shot of ether in the airbox to see if starts better. to rule out a fuel issue. then ck into distributor. have you ck'd it for spark? is it weak? is it possible the timing belt jumped time?

Hard to keep running when warm 92 eagle tsi

The INFAMOUS DSM Hot Start Problem

Here are a few things to try: 1) Block off your EGR valve. Sometimes these fail, and when they do, this is what happens.

2) Change your vaccum hoses, especially the one going to the fuel-pressure regulator. Sometimes this one leaks and creates problems for the FPR.

3) Change your plug wires. I'd use some MagnaCore wires. They're less $$$ than the stock ones, and they're 8.5mm opposed to the stock 6mm. The stock wires are no good, especially when raising the boost.

4) Clean your throttle body REALLY well. Make it spotless, including both sides of the throttle plate.

5) Clean out your intercooler. Do this by taking it out, dump about a gallon of gasoline into it, then shake it around and dump out. Repeat process until gas coming out is clean.
