How many miles are on the engine? Has the timing chain ever been replaced, if it hasn't there is a possibility that the timing chain has jumped a tooth on the cam gear which throws off the ignition timing and will keep it from starting but you will still have spark and fuel.

SOURCE: car wont start, not getting spark

crankshaft sensor, or computer on toyotas then it was usually the distributor or the computer, but the crankshaft sensor might be bad too thats what helps to get you spark.

My 97 tahoe turns over, but will not start, fuel pump works fine, & has new plugs, wires, distributer cap, rotor, coil,& ignition control module,& new fuel filter, got any solutions?

Try spraying quick start in the intake.if it acts like it wants to start if only for a second or two you could have low fuel pressure.you should have at least 30 lbs.you need special pressure tester.if it doesn't fire, check for spark.if it has the "flat"dist. Cap you might want to check it because they have a lot of problems with that cap.

Let me also say that on my 97 pathfinder it ran good up until i replaced the water pump. then it wouldnt start. so i changed the spark plug wires and plugs. same thing...wants to start just wont fire up....

My first thought was the timing belt was not in time since you have to remove the belt to get to the pump.
The crank sensor is near the flywheel so it should not have been touched.
But timing should not affect the spark coming out of the coil.
It could be a problem with the resistor for the coil or something with the computer.
Did you also replace the cap and rotor when you changed the distributor ? Is the spark weak coming out of the coil ?
You may have to get a used shop manual from Ebay to get the test procedures and wiring diagram for the ignition system.

I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3L. The car is hard to start after it sits for the day. I found an oxidized distributer. I sanded the posts and it ran fine for about a month. I then replaced the...

moisture in your cap causes oxidation. You should check to make sure the seal for you distributor between the distributor and the cap is still good. Also a faulty ignition system such as a problematic coil or high resistance in your ignition wires can lead to ignition related problems. Doing a partial tune doesn't always work. Do the wires, plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, PVC valve and depending on the mileage the ignition coil.

Just replaced engine in my 97 its a vortec brought it to tdc put in distributar it turns over and tries to start but wont i turn it just a little it acts better but i cant move it far enough

take the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder and turn the engine by hand until the piston is at the top dead center of its stroke (put a screw driver in the hole and you should be able to tell when its all the way up). now pull the cap off the distributer the rotor should be pointing at the #1 cylinder wire. if not then the distributer is in the wrong possition. remove the distributer and point the rotor in the correct possition(#1 cylinder) and place the distributer back in.also if this is a used engine replace the cap, rotor plugs and wires.the truck should start. Hope this helps you out.
