In 1990 most Automatics had a cable driven speedo. If not...were it is connected to the trani there is 1 bolt holding in the electric speedo unit. Check the connection and or replace the speed sensor that the bolt is holding in
it is done completly by electric connection..? on a 92 pick up i belive it still has a speedo cable located at the tail of the tranny.. either the gear is bad or the cable is broken ..if it has cruize control there are two cables one tranny to cruize box and then cruize box to speedo
If it's a mechanical speedo, there should be a cable running to the side of the transmission. You can disconnect the cable housing and spin the cable with a drill to see if the speedo works. If it does not then check for a broken cable or disconnected cable behind the speedo. If cable is good then either the speedo head is bad or the output gear at the trans is worn out.
If you can hear it while your driving its the speedo and not the cable. Replace speedometer or whole gauge cluster.( What ever is easyer) You can find one on ebay. It could also be the speedo sensor on the top back half on the engine. REAL EXPENSIVE! Even for a used one. About $150 bucks for the sensor. And about the same for the Cluster.
rpm is a sensor on your engine. Speedo comes off the tranny or transfer case. Some speedos are digital and some are cables. The digital ones- take out the old sensor and spice on a new one and screw it back it. Here is the matching part
