You need a code scanner hooked up to it to find out why the light is on.
If there is an advanced auto or an autozone near you, go there and tell them the engine light is on, and you need a code retrieved. They don't charge for this, where other places do. Tales about a minute.

If the check engine light is on, take the vehicle to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault codes that are stored in the car's computer. Most parts stores will perform the scan at no charge and getting the codes will show any faults in the car's systems that the computer has identified. This will narrow down what needs to be looked at and will end speculation. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Did you check the fuel cap? Also auto zone if there is one around will often check out the codes for free.

Battery light on alternator wasn't charging above 12 volts checked at battery. Replaced alternator, then battery light still on.

Get a different alternator. 13.5 volts is too low. It needs to be 14 to 14.5 volts. The other battery is over charged.

1994 Park Avenue. New battery (battery light on) oil light on (oil is fine) car dies when driving at low speeds. Service engine light on but no bad codes are detected when tested.

sounds like you could have a few problems. On the battery light it could be alternator. Test voltage at battery with car running, should be 13-14 volts. Oil light on could be oil level sensor on bottom of oil pan. Dying problem could be mass air flow sensor, coolant temp sensor, idle air valve.

2000 Chevy impala low coolant light on needs jump start every morning and night squeeky

1. If you need to jump start the car the battery is failing and you need to replace it. Other wise you may have an excessive power drain while the car is sitting which is running down the battery sufficiently so it will not run the starter motor.

2. If you have a low coolant warning light then you need to check the coolant level in the radiator when the engine has cooled and top it up using only the correct spec coolant for the car as specified by GM. Coolant level in the radiator needs to be checked very regularly in any event as does engine oil and power steering fluid level. If the coolant is low your engine will overheat and will likely cause very expensive engine damage many times what it will cost to fix the cause of the low coolant. You will have an external leak(such as a leaking radiator or leaking hose or failed radiator cap etc etc ) or an internal coolant leak that is causing the loss of coolant. Whatever the cause, and you need to have it investigated and repaired straight away if the cooling system continues to lose coolant.

Why would the oil light stay on?

That depends on the type of oil warning light being displayed. There are 2 types of warning lights

1. Low oil pressure light which all cars have
2. low oil level light which some cars have.

Low OIL PRESSURE warning means the oil pressure is below minimum and when this happens there will be insufficient lubrication of many engine parts because sufficient oil cannot get to all parts of the engine it is required to lubricate. Until the cause is identified and rectified the warning light will remain. If you run your engine with low oil pressure you will cause expensive damage to internal engine components.

Low OIL LEVEL warning means the oil in the sump has dropped to a dangerously low level (which may be due to an oil leak or abnormal oil consumption by the engine.) This warning means the oil level needs to be topped up and the warning will stay displayed until you top up the oil. Running the engine with low oil will cause expensive engine damage.
Since it is a 2 minute job, Oil levels should be checked fortnightly as a minimum, together with radiator coolant and power steering fluid levels, if you run the car most days each week as most people do.

It is possible for a warning light to remain displayed when the cause has been dealt with because there is a problem with the sender unit. However it needs to be established with alternative checks that the problem has been fixed before investigating if there is a problem with the warning light itself.

Check guages light keeps coming on when i am in park or have my foot on the breaks it is a 2002 chevy trailblazer.

I would check my oil pressure gauge and the oil level as well. the fuel level guage also malfunctions on those models so make sure it is working properly and not floating from full to empty that will cause the light to come on as well as overheating of the engine(low coolant levels)low oil level, low fuel level, and low charging volts from your alternator.if all is well suspect a short in dash.

Why did the battery light stay on after installing a new alternator on my 1999 mercury sable. I put a new belt and tensioner pulley as well as a new idler and power steering pulley. I believe the battery...

check for 12 volts at battery with engine off.

The check for 14 volts with the engine running. If not 14, alternator is not generating any amperage.
