SOURCE: Trac light and Check engine light came on how to FIX?
Here's the best way I know to fix this problem (as you said:) without paying. Make friends with someone who works at a professional garage. Get them to scan the computer and gather the codes. Or you could marry into the family of someone that works in the industry. You need to see which code was saved in the computer ( and there are MANY possibilities) before you can have any idea what to do next. Try to look for a coupon in the mailers that come to your home or in the local papers. Many shops will offer a special price for scanning your car's PCM (comp.) so they can get you in the door and make you a customer. You should be able to get this done for 40 to 60 bucks depending on where you live. It takes a few minutes, but some shops charge a full Labor Hour for the service. It's a Lexus, not a VW Beetle, so the price of ownership includes maintenance, you dig?

well, the first to do is an oil service to your car, after disconnect the negative battery terminal few minutes to reset

Unscrew the gas cap, wait 30 sec and screw it back on making 3 clicks/cracks. Should be ok in a day or two.
SOURCE: trac off and check engine light for lexus es 300
A week ago, on my Lexus ES 300 (2001), "Check Engine" and "Trac Off" lights came on. This coincided with me filling the gas tank to the brim to round the dollar to be paid. I cleaned the gas tank cap and the tank opening. However, both lights persisted. On the same day, when I turned on the car again, there was a hesitance, a stuttering to come on. Both "Check Engine" and "Trac Off" lights were still on.
The next day, the car wouldn't come on at all. It sounded as the battery was dead. I couldn't even jump start the car. So, I got a new battery from Costco ($59) and put it in. It took 15-20 seconds of cranking to get the car started. Once it was started, the engine sounded fine and the RPM normal. The "Check Engine" light was off. However, the "Trac Off" was still on. I cleaned the gas tank cap one more time.
The next morning, when I turned the car on, there was no problems. It came on instantly as it used to be, didn't have any warning lights, and drove smoothly.

I know I need to fix it, I want to know if it means the traction control is not working? Is it complicated to fix?
