Clutches burnt needs rebuilt if clutches fry there's no grabbing it
Testimonial: "So it wouldn’t be a solenoid"
No. If it goes in gear those gears are good Shifting relies on clutches. Fluid to move if no gear it’s not solenoid

P0894 OBD-II Trouble Code:
Transmission Component Slipping. DTC code P0894 means there is an issue with the vehicle's automatic transmission component due to low, empty, or dirty fluid, or faulty shift solenoids. Check and fill to correct level when engine is HOT. Test snd/or replace solenoid..cheers
SOURCE: TRANSMISSION LEAK
Pretty basic. If it's leaking that badly, you should have no problem locating the leak source. Line leaks are best done using compression fittings. (cut line and install). You can also use high pressure hose (like what's used when installing a trans cooler) slide it onto the line so there is at least three inches on each side of the line and use two mini-clamps with the screw parts opposite each other on each end.
If the leak is from the unit itself, each repair is different, some require trans removal. such as a front seal failure (fluid coming from the bellhousing.)
Hope it's just a line!
Once repaired, I recommend that you put in a container of lucas trans treatment to mitigate any ill effects of the run low condition as well.
SOURCE: I have first gear, third gear, and fourth. Missing
You need to have the transmission re built its time. If the transmission smells burnt it means the bands are fried and now the seals willl be gone also.

sounds like the 3rd clutch pack is burnt out.
Testimonial: "I think you are right, I was just hoping, ya know. Thanks for the response. I needed the second opion. Lee"

sounds like 3rd gear/clutch is worn.I don't think a service will do any good. But if you remove the pan and find debris you know you will need a trans in the near future.

If you have no overdrive at all, and virtually no third, then it's time for an overhaul. The 3-4 clutches have failed, a common problem in this trans since 1981. Yes, 1981. Your trans is a 4L60-E that is computer controlled. In 1981 it was called a THM700-R4, and was hydraulically controlled. The input clutch drum is basically the same as it was in 1981, and the 3-4 clutches are prone to failure, usually around 130,000 to 150,000 kms (75,000 to 90,000 miles).
