My 2005 trailblazer starts cold & when hot but when it gets about halfway down on temp gauge it cranks a long time & the gas mileage dropped a lot could it be the temp sender
I know that you can't trust the Trailblazer instrument cluster at all. Our 2007 was the biggest mess, but it's the gauge clusters and not the sending units that are defective. There are Good Folks making a Living doing nothing more than rebuilding Trailblazer Instrument Clusters and you can google that. The only way to know for sure is to verify with other means. For example, For MPH on the speedometer simply drive an indicated 60 mph on any Interstate Hwy that has Mile markers and time how long in seconds it takes to get from one marker to the next. 60 seconds means the speedometer is perfect. A temperature gun can tell you if the temp gauge is working right or not. Is your mileage changing or are the gauges giving you bad info? My advice is start at the gauges because they will drive you nuts. I hope that helps you!

First when vehicle is cold like in the morning check and make sure that the vehicle has enough coolant/ antifreeze in radiator and reservoir. If coolant is need use a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. You will need some time to do this let car run at idle until the temp guage is in the middle NOT+ normal operating temperature. At this point if the thermostat should be in the open position. Let vehicle run and check to make sure that radiator fan comes on. This should come on when guage is about midway/half way. If temperature rises above half going to h/hot and fan doesn't come on, you either have a BAD FAN BAD FAN SWITCH BAD FAN RELAY OR BLOWN FAN SWITCH FUSE. You will need to check all of the following I will help if its needed. If fan comes on and doesn't go off and vehicle continues to get hot even with fan running. Feel radiator hoses and see if the lower radiator hose is cool/cold. If it is you have thermostat that stuck closed. Replace thermostat and fix problem. If all the above is good and vehicle continues to over heat. THE BAD NEW IS THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET /CRACKED HEAD /BROKEN WATER JACKET. Basically you will need a HEAD JOB at least a head gasket. ONe tell tail sign of this is oil looking like milkshake/chocolate milk-a creamish while residue in oil or antifreeze. Contact if you need hel0p. Good Luck and thanks for using FIX YA

Blair, I would take a look at he TPS (throttle position sensor) located on the throttle body. In other words, it sounds as thought sensor when heated is changing its value to "open" or "shorted".
If the car starts OK when cold, use a hair dryer to heat the TPS when the engine is cold to see if you can duplicate the problem.
Also is the a service engine light on? Codes?
If you have a "digital volt/ohm meter" available you can read the variable resistance of the sensor when the problem occurrs to determine if the sensor is defective.

Common problem on the 03-06 Trailblazer instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Trailblazer fuel gauge problems

I assume you have checked the cooling system to ensure that first, that it is completely full of coolant (not just the overflow tank) and second that there are no leaks anywhere. Your description indicates either low coolant level and/or air locks in the cooling system. Only check coolant level when engine is cold. If it needs topping up, add coolant and then run engine at idle with heat control on full, until it reaches operating temperature, topping up as necessary. Allow cooling fans to cycle on and off a few times to ensure all air is purged from system. If coolant was low, then check regularly when engine is warm to see if you can find where the coolant is leaking. The places where the hoses connect to the metal pipes around the engine are the most likely points of leakage or a hose could have weakened and split. If coolant level is OK and there are no leaks then it could mean a faulty water pump.
