You have to be very careful with the airbag system It is very dangerous.
Before attempting anything. It will be more appropriate for a mechanic or technicians to do it. But have a look at this link:

I'm not sure if yours is an E36 or an E46 model.
On the E46 a common AIR BAG error light is caused by the stretching of a cable underneath the driver's seat when it is slid back and forth (usually when vehicle is shared by different height drivers!).
Unfortunately the solution is replacing this cable (quite cheap), then having the code read and extinguished by a code reader at Bmw (-expensive hourly rates though).
Some other places have code readers like vehicle electrics/alarms specialist -but the cable is still needed to be replaced first (2 min job) -I think ebay has one at the moment (but compare prices with Bmw Dealer parts prices first).
Check Google with airbag light and Bmw E46 (there's shed loads of info).

SOURCE: I have a 2001 Stratus. Airbag light stays on

That happened to me when the clock spring in the steering wheel broke. But the clock spring controls the air bags, horn and cruise control. Check if your horn and cruise control works. If not, I bet it's the clock spring from turning your wheel. It was about $150 to replace. Good luck!

SOURCE: my airbag light and horn not working on my crysler voyager 1997

hey guys with problems with the air bag lights on and horn not working in Chrysler Voyager...

this is the problem with the steering wheel clockwork spring. The connector that brings the wires from the steering wheel instruments (hord, airbag, cruise control) and takes it through the steering column to the car body but allows steering wheel to rotate without breaking the wires. The dealer should have adivised you that there is a life long warrantly from manufacturer of this part. There was a recall notice issued by Chrysler in 2003/4 to bring in car for replacement of part if the Airbag light came on. I got mine done last year under the recall.

Have 2001 buick regal that's making wninning noise when you crank up and also while driving

check the power steering fluid level first if it's low add. If it still does it have someone turn the wheel from full left to full right and see if it gets louder. If all of this does not change the sound then have your transmission checked out. Both of the pumps "whine" when they need attention.

How to install clock spring

Not recomended for untrained people as airbags can be very dangerous. That said you need to. 1) disconect battry 2) remove SRS (Airbag fuse) 3) remove shroud around steering colum 4) wait ten minutes. 5) remove horn pad (airbag houseing) usualy held in by tamper proof bits from back of steering wheel. 6) unplug wires to airbag & horn 7) undo steering wheel bolt & mark position of steering wheel to colum splines. 8) remove steering wheel with suitable puller (NOT a hammer) 9) unclip clock spring & replace 10) reverse procedure

Replacing turn signal switch 2002 regal

GM multi-function switches (the switch on the steering column) are VERY involved to replace (unlike Dodge and Ford)! in most cases, you have to tear half the steering column apart to gain access to its mounts. You are better off taking the car to a mechanic if that is the case.

My cruise control on my 2000 buick lasabre does not work

In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to disarm the airbag system can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury disconnect the battery 30 minutes prior to start of work.

Wipers stop when turn signle is turned on and then wipers will only work when left signle is on

Your turn/wiper switch is bad in the steering column. It's not too hard to replace if you have a steering wheel puller. Be sure and disconnect the battery so you don't trigger the air bag.

Sometime rubbing noise in steering colum when I turn

The steering wheel cover is rubbing against the base of the steering wheel. With the car running and the door open car in park and emergency brake on look from the side at the steering wheel and where it mounts to spin the wheel both directions and see if it touches if it does in one spot you can use a screw driver to gently pry that spot where it touches away from the two separate parts, if it's not touching then the clock spring is going bad in the steering wheel, this controls the deployment of the air bag if that’s the case take it to a shop as it is dangerous to wok on the air bag system without knowing what your doing, IF the clock spring has to be replaced it will cost about $150.00 to replace but it is a serious safety issue. Get it looked at by a mechanic if the easy fix does not work, a shop fee just to look at it will help the mechanic tell you if it needs to be replaced and is safe.
