you didn't mention what size engine you have, so i assumed its a 1.8L. thermostat is located at the housing just above the waterpump on the front of the engine. its #5 in the attached link http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CJ11&mospid=48077&btnr=11_1393&hg=11&fg=35

it wont be a dip stick as such it will be a single bolt on the side of the gearbox remove this then top up the gearbox until the oil starts weeping out of this hole wait for it to stop leaking then replace the bolt job done!

They're not shocks they're struts. It requires spring compressors and air impact tools.
Unless you have them and the know how how to compress strut springs. don't do it. It can be dangerous.
It's why it's a lot of money to have it done.
