1998 ford ranger 2.5L manual trans. 4x2... i have power to inertia switch but not to fuel pump. help please

Fuel shut off switch may need to be reset. A friend of mine had it trip when he had a flat tire some years ago on ford car. The reset on his was behind the plastic piece to the right of where the video below. Video below shows fuel shut off/inertia switch on upper floorboard passenger side.

You can try swapping out your fuel pump relay to make sure the relay is not bad. Below link may help

Three wires - the dark green with yellow stripe comes from the fuel pump relay ! When energized the relay sends battery voltage to the inertia switch via the dark green with yellow stripe wire . Your vehicle has an inertia switch, which is located on the tow board to the right of the transmission pump. Usually the fuel pump does not shut off except in the case of an accident but you can check it anyway. Being fuel injected, your fuel pump is probably in the gas tank and if there is no power to the wires coming out of the tank, you probably have a bad fuel pump

Are you getting power to the inertia switch? I would check the fuse and relay for the fuel pump.

Did you check the fuel inertia switch in the passenger side kick panel ?

The fuel pump is powered :
the fuse to the fuel pump relay.
The fuel pump relay to the fuel inertia switch
The fuel inertia switch to the fuel pump itself.

At the fuel inertia switch in the kick panel, power from the relay is the Dark Green w/ Yellow stripe wire and the pink w/ black stripe wire is the power. from the fuel inertia switch to the fuel pump.

If you jumper the fuel pump relay, you should hear it run. If not pull the fuel pump relay, and check the pins in the relay socket, pin 30 should be the power from the fuse.



If you have power at pin #30, jumper the relay socket as shown with the red line above, and check the dark green w/ yellow stripe wire at the fuel inertia switch for power.
Press the button on the top of the fuel inertia switch, and check for power leaving the fuel inertia switch on the pink w/ black stripe wire.

This is tests good, check for power at the fuel pump, same pink w/ black stripe wire.
Fuel inertia switch info is in the owners manual, If you did not get an owners manual with your truck ( purchased used ), you can download one from Ford :

Your inertia switch is located in the right hand kick panel at the top, hard to reach with panel on, you can check it to see that it is in fact pushed in, but they sometimes burn out in this position, try using a jumper wire across the connections of the inertia switch and see if your pump runs, if so replace the switch, try the same for your ranger. Fuel Pump relay switch is in the main box usually located on the drivers side Fender in a black box. According to the owner's manual in the power distribution box in the engine
compartment (Ford recommends disconnecting your battery)
Relay # 5 is the fuel pump relay , and also in the PD BOX is a 20 amp mini-fuse
for the fuel pump relay + RAP module in location # 9


( P.S. - don't forget your fuel pump inertia switch , in the right front passenger area ,
by the right front kick panel )Sometimes this gets kicked by passenger or if the car is bummed hard it could set this item to shut down fuel system. Best of Luck

Hi..my name is Keith..and the 2 things that i know of...that will not let power go to the fuel pump is 1..the fuel pump relay being bad..or 2..that something has tripped the Inertia Switch...and it needs resetting..i hope this will help

THERE IS A FUEL PUMP SHUT OFF SWITCH(INERTIA) ON THE PASSENGER SIDE KICK PANEL.INSIDE CAB UNDER DASH.IT INTERUPTS POWER TO THE PUMP IF U ARE IN A COLLISION.PUSH THE RED BUTTON ON TOP OF IT.IF THAT DOES NOT WORK CHECK FOR POWER IN AND POWER OUT.NO POWER OUT BAD SWITCH.NO POWER IN OTHER PROBLEM
